Carjacking attempt leads to one shot

On August 7, 2024, around 10:20 A.M., Crisp County E-911 Communications dispatched Crisp County Sheriff’s Deputies to a disturbance that was upgraded to a shooting on HWY 280 W near the Crossroad Store Road intersection.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a Grey Dodge Charger stopped on the highway behind a road construction truck. The driver of the Charger, Calvin Williams Jr., a 40-year-old male from Albany, Georgia, got out of the vehicle and began making several threats to the workers on the scene. Williams stated he would kill them. Williams assaulted one of the road construction workers with rebar and attempted to steal the truck. During the assault, another worker retrieved their firearm and fired a round, wounding Williams. A Sumter County Sheriff’s Deputy returning from court and was flagged down to assist.
Williams was stable and communicating with authorities before being transported by Air Evac. Additional agencies that responded to the scene include Crisp County Fire Rescue, Crisp County EMS, and Georgia State Patrol. Sumter County authorities confirmed Williams was involved in a hit-and-run in Sumter County before this incident. Authorities also located a bag of suspected marijuana and suspected cocaine in the vehicle Williams was operating.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Currently, Williams is charged with the following:
- (3) Counts of Hijacking a Motor Vehicle First Degree
- (2) Counts of Aggravated Assault
- (1) Count of Criminal Attempt to Commit an Armed Robbery
- (1) Count of Entering an Automobile
- (1) Count of Possession of a Control Substance (Cocaine)
- (1) Count of Possession of Marijuana Less Than an Ounce
- (2) Counts of Simple Battery
A portion of HWY 280 W near milepost 5 (near the Crossroad Store Road) is closed due to an carjacking attempt that led to one individual being shot. Multiple first responders are on the scene. Please avoid the area as authorities work; this is an active scene. There is no threat to the public. More information will be released as it becomes available.
