Today will be a day of preparation for Crisp County and our neighbors as Tropical Storm Debby approaches the Florida coast. The storm itself is 200 miles from likely landfall near Cedar Key, Florida. Another way to consider it, TS Debby is about 16 hours from landfall. Let’s begin to prepare – today – for this serious weather event.
There are some serious threats to Crisp County residents, of which long periods of heavy rainfall may produce Flash Flooding, river and stream flooding, and cause local roadways to be under water at times. Use caution when you are out driving tomorrow, especially if we receive large amounts of rainfall. Remember – turn around, don’t drown! Do not drive through areas where water is across the road. Stop, turn around, and call 9-1-1 to report it.
In addition to heavy rainfall, we may see windy conditions as Tropical Storm Debby passes. This may include trees, tree limbs, and other debris on the roadways and in your yard. Power outages may occur with downed trees, so exercise caution as you travel. Remember, once sustained or gusty winds appear, stay indoors and off the streets. Your public safety agencies will do the same when winds are greater than 40 miles per hour; take heed and stay safe.
In addition to heavy, sustained rainfall and gusty winds, we may experience thunderstorms and tornadoes as a direct result of Tropical Storm Debby. In preparation for such severe weather, make sure you’ve signed up for our Code Red alerts and have a secondary source for weather information – TV, radio, weather radio, and/or social media.
Today is a good day to get prepared for whatever Tropical Storm Debby may bring to Cordele and Crisp County. We will receive weather briefings throughout the day today and will update you as soon as possible. Also, the National Hurricane Center publishes information on Tropical Storm Debby at this website:
