Troop 270 attends Merit Badge University

Approximately 225 Scouts and Scouters from four states, representing twenty-one Troops, descended on Camp Osborn in Worth County on April 25-27, 2025 for the South Georgia Council’s annual Merit Badge University. Among that number were one hundred sixty-seven Scouts, including six from Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270. Attendees came from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Over the course of the weekend, the Scouts had the opportunity to work on any of thirty-six merit badges, including Archery, Art,
Astronomy, Basketry, Canoeing, Chemistry, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Crime Prevention, Electricity, Electronics, Farm Mechanics, Fingerprinting,, First Aid, Fly Fishing, Forestry, Game Design, Home Repair, Horsemanship, Landscape Architecture, Mammal Study, Nuclear Science, Oceanography, Orienteering, Personal Fitness, Plumbing, Public Speaking, Radio, Rifle Shooting, Search & Rescue, Shotgun Shooting, Soil and Water Conservation, Space Exploration, Welding, and Woodcarving.
In addition to the merit badges, the Scouts could take part in CPR training or the Trailblazer Program. Trailblazer covers many of the requirements for the Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.
Adult leaders from Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 led the the Trailblazer program, teaching Scouting skills to a dozen new Scouts. They were assisted by Tifton Boy Scout Troop 62 Scoutmaster Ben Bennett.
Scouts representing Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 were Senior Patrol Leader Jacob Frost, Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, Gabe Browning, Mason Phillips, and Jensen Wade. Local adult Scouters who taught the Trailblazer program were Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, and Troop Committee Members Brady Atkins and Gene Baker.
If you know of a boy, ages 11-17, who might like to “Live Scouting’s Adventure” or would benefit from the leadership and service opportunities offered through our program, please bring him to one of our meetings at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut most any Monday evening from 6:30-8:00. The Hut is located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is chartered by the Cordele Kiwanis Club.
