A Vienna man is dead and a Cordele woman is in critical condition at a Macon hospital after a two-car wreck on I-75 at 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday in Dooly County.
Cleland Franklin, aged 51, was killed and Denys Perry, aged 44, was seriously injured when a Ford Focus struck them from behind as they stood by their vehicle, which was parked on the left-hand emergency lane of I-75 northbound near mile marker 109.
A third Cordele resident riding with Franklin and Perry escaped the crash unharmed. The driver of the Ford Focus, 22-year-old Julie Phillips of Madison, Ga., also avoided injury.
The Georgia State Patrol’s fatality investigation team continues to investigate the accident. Poor weather has hampered the investigation, and as of press time it is unknown if any charges will be filed in the case.
Just 40 minutes before, two different accidents on I-75 southbound occurred nearly simultaneously in the vicinity of mile marker 109.
One of the southbound wrecks involved three vehicles.
A vehicle heading south in the middle lane stalled and began a chain reaction of collisions involving the two others. Two people were transported to Crisp Regional Hospital with injuries and two more were sent to the Macon Medical Center. One of the injured was from Leesburg, Ga., but the others were from out of state.
The second southbound wreck happened when a driver traveling in the center lane sideswiped a truck pulling a trailer. No injuries resulted from that accident.
