ROCHELLE— The Wilcox County football team hosted Irwin County for a region 2-A matchup on Friday night, and the Indians (8-0, number one in class A) left Rochelle with a 48-0 victory over the Patriots.
The Irwin County Indians scored seven points in the first quarter, 28 in the second and 13 in the third period on their way to the 48-0 win over Wilcox.
It was a tough night for the Patriots against the class A state title favorites, but Jacquarius Dixon (five carries for 57 yards), Desmond Tisdol (six total tackles, four of those for a loss of yards, and a fumble recovery), Keaun Brown (six tackles, one for a loss), and Matt McAdoo (four kick returns for 74 yards) all put in good efforts for a few bright spots on the night.
The Patriots fell to 4-4 on the season with the defeat to number one Irwin County, and Wilcox sat at number 22 in the most recently updated class A playoff rankings. The top 24 ranked teams in GHSA class A at the conclusion of the season get into the state playoff bracket.
Wilcox hosts rivals Turner County (5-3, ranked 17) this Friday night in what has turned into a big game in the playoff hopes for each team. The Rebels, coming off of a 24-7 win over Atkinson County Friday night, are in need of a win on Friday to solidify their playoff position knowing that they still have Irwin left for their last game on the regular season schedule. Wilcox will go into the contest still with a chance to potentially host a playoff game with a win over Turner and then a win in their finale at Atkinson (3-5, ranked 28).
The Turner Rebels took the win over Wilcox in last season’s matchup in Ashburn by a score of 21-20 with a last minute score that ended the Patriots’ playoff hopes.
The Rebels have taken the last four games in the series between the two schools after Wilcox had won every matchup from 2008 to 2013. Turner leads the series with 25 wins, 14 losses and two ties according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association’s records. Their records also indicate that the two rival schools have matched up every year since 1988, except 98 and 99.
Kickoff between the two playoff hopeful rivals is scheduled for 7:30 on Friday night in Rochelle.
