CORDELE- The Crisp County High School baseball team opened up region play this week with a three game series versus Cook County. The Hornets took the win in the first two games of the series, with a 10-0 win in game one on Wednesday in Adel, and 10-3 in game two at Crisp last night.
In yesterday’s game, Cook County opened a big lead early on after several Cougar errors allowed the Hornets to pile up eight runs in the first inning. The score remained 8-0 until the Hornets added two runs to their total in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 10-0.
The Cougars were able to break the shutout in the bottom half of the sixth by scoring three runs. Crisp County Outfielder, Billy Jones, led off the inning with a single to left field, and a walk by Myles Napier gave the Cougars two runners on base with no outs. Connor Richmond attempted a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, but he was able to reach base after an error by the Cook County infield. Jackson Napier came up next and took advantage of the bases loaded situation with an RBI single to left field. Bailey Barfield drove in the second Cougar run with an RBI on a fielder’s choice groundout. Richmond was then able to score on a Hornet error for the third Crisp run of the inning.
The Cougars ended up loading up the bases in the bottom of the seventh after three straight hits from Collin Infante, Jones, and Myles Napier, but the Hornets were able to keep the score at 10-3 and they left with an away region win.
Billy Jones finished the game with three hits in three at-bats for the Cougars, and he also pitched a scoreless inning in the top of the seventh.
The three game series concludes this afternoon with the two teams squaring off in Adel. After today’s game, the Cougars have a home game versus Schley County on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Cougars fell to Schley County earlier this month in Ellaville by a final score of 3-1.
