Chastity Stephens hurls the 2nd perfect game in two days
By Joe Joe Wright
In just 24 hours two girls from Wilcox County, one a freshman for the Wilcox Patriots and the other a senior for Crisp Academy Wildcats have pitched a perfect game. I am totally flabbergasted !!! Not since May of 2015 have I seen anything so completely abnormal. (Back then a Dorough kid from Twiggs Academy hit a grand slam with his 3 sisters on base, a first and only time in baseball history worldwide.)
On Monday Josie Wessel and her teammates beat Deerfield Windsor 2-0 on Tuesday Chastity Stephens pitched just 5 innings at home against Turner County and struck out one batter but nobody ever reached base and the Lady Patriots downed the Turner County Lady Rebels 10-0 in a mercy rule shortened game. It is of course a very rare occurrence to pitch a perfect game and it is even more spectacular when two girls do it in consecutive days from the same county. The lady Pats wasted no time in handing the Turner County Lady Rebels their 3 loss of the year. Going ahead 1 to0 in the 1st inning the Pats added 3 more runs in the 2nd inning and another in the 3rd. Then in the bottom of the 4th inning Wilcox touched Turner for 5 more tallies. In the top half of the 5th inning Wilcox and their young freshman pitcher Stephens set the visitors down again 1-2-3 and this game was history. “ We are off to a good start but I am very proud of Chastity and for her on this milestone and so proud of her teammates for playing excellent defense behind her,” said Head Coach Stephen McDuffie. The Lady Patriots will be visiting in Cordele next on Friday and Saturday as they begin play in the Watermelon tournament against Schley County at 5pm.
