Longtime Georgia legislator and State Transportation Board member Johnny Floyd will be honored next week with the dedication of an interstate highway interchange in Cordele.
Interstate 75 at US 280 in Cordele will be dedicated as the Honorable Johnny Floyd Interchange. The ceremony is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, outside the Fairfield Inn & Suites, 2001 16th Ave. East (US 280).
Floyd, of Cordele, died in 2024 at the age of 86. State Rep. Noel Williams Jr. introduced the resolution to recognize the vital role that Floyd played in “leadership and his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia.” Floyd dedicated more than 34 years to public service, first in the Georgia House of Representatives and then as a member of the State Transportation Board.
As a state representative, Floyd’s constituents included the citizens of Crisp, Dooly and Pulaski counties and parts of Houston County. He was vice chairman of the House Transportation Committee and was a member of the House Appropriations, Banks and Banking, and Motor Vehicles committees.
After retiring from his role as a state representative, Floyd was elected in 2008 to represent Congressional District 2 on the State Transportation Board. District 2 includes the southwest corner of the state and parts of middle Georgia. Floyd focused on economic development for rural Georgians, mobility for commuters in urban areas, and the development of freight routes for Georgia’s ports and logistics industry, the resolution states. He held the roles of chairman, vice chairman, and secretary. He was a member of the Board until 2023, when he did not seek reelection.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia’s economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment.
