Attendance was high for the Cordele City Commission Meeting held October 15th. The agenda was full of official business as well as a bevy of community members who were recognized for their tireless efforts to the City of Cordele and Crisp County. The meeting began with a couple of issues regarding zoning variances. The first zoning item was a request to amend the zoning for 2501 East 13th Avenue from Light Industrial (LI), to Office Industrial (OI). The property is owned by Carden Summers-Summerco Inc. The item was affirmed by the Commission. The second item was a variance to amend the zoning for The Orchard subdivision of East 29th Avenue from R-7.5S to R-4, Multi-Family Residential. The Property is owned by Doubled Up Outdoor Properties, LLC.
Following the public comment portion of the meeting, the commission moved on to a proclamation of Red Ribbon Week set to take place October 23-31. The commission heard from Monica Simmons, President of the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce. The commission then considered an event permit for the Community Fall Festival. This event is scheduled to take place October 26th, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the corner of 1st Street and East 15th Avenue. The organizer is Glenn Jarrett. Police Chief Jalon Hill approved this permit October 10, 2024. Up next on the agenda was consideration of an event permit for the Brain Tumor Walk-Walk For Angela, October 31, 2024. The walk will commence at 9:00am. The walk will start at the Crisp County Government Center, 210 S. 7th Street and continue to the Crisp County Recreation Dept., 1205 N. 5th Street. The organizers is Angela Wilcox. Police Chief Jalon Heard approved this permit on October 10th, 2024.
The establishment of an entertainment district was also considered at the commission meeting. The Second Reading of an ordinance amending Article VII of Chapter 3 and the city code of the City of Cordele establishing an entertainment district; repealing distance requirements for the food establishments with alcohol licenses from schools, college campuses, churches; repealing all ordinances in conflict herewith; and for other purposes. This issue was passed by voice vote.
An item on the agenda of particular importance to the health of the residents of Cordele was also heard. There was a motion to approve an agreement to administer notifications to customers for the lead service line inventory and replacement project. The commission was pleased to hear that there has been no lead found in the water of any city residents. The service line inventory and replacement project is in response to a federal law mandating that such lead pipes be replaced, and that the city is responsible for the replacement of the water lines up to the domicile. The commission heard discussion on how to proceed with ethics complaints from the public. A compliance officer has been selected and was formally approved by the commission. The agenda items were wrapped up with the City Managers Report. The commission did not have any issues that would require an Executive Session.

The commission was put in a more pleasant mood when the Honorable Isaac H. Owens stood to recognize Beverly Vance for her 42 years of service to the city of Cordele. The public was treated to another joyous recognition of Nancy Butler who was honored for her 36 years of service to the city of Cordele. Also recognized at this meeting were the Crisp County EMS, Melody Godfrey of the Light Up Pink Initiative, and Tracie Hadaway from the Regional Commission-7th Street Urban Redevelopment Plan. There was a very interesting presentation from the UGA students regarding the Westbrook Park Alternatives. The members were quite impressed by the colorful selections of three different renderings for this location.
The City Commission will meet again on Tuesday November 5th.
