Sara Stephens, a beloved member of the Cordele, Georgia community, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Zion Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Hughes & Wright Funeral Home.
She was born to William Hardy Stephens and Vera Elizabeth Wade Stephens in Cordele. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband K.D. Childers, and her previous husband, Thomas Otto Griffin Sr. Also preceding her in death are her siblings: William Hardy Stephens and Vera McGlamry; her step children: Charlie Griffin and Keith Childers; and step-grandchildren: Heather Daughtry and Sid Griffin.
Sara lived a life filled by service, dedication, and passion. A faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church, Sara attended services whenever her health allowed. She taught Sunday School for over 20 years. Sara could also be counted on to teach at VBS and to work with Antioch’s youth as they attended church camp in the summer.
Sara’s devotion to community was reflected in her lifelong passion for education. She taught Special Ed in Thomas and Colquitt counties before moving back to Crisp County. Sara taught 8th grade Math and Algebra at A.S. Clark until she retired. Her devotion to teaching inspired a love for learning in all who entered her classroom. Sara also touched the lives of many as she volunteered her time by working in the library of the South Central Baptist Network (formerly the Houston Baptist Association).
Known for her warmth and hospitality, she was an exceptional cook. The bounty of her table and the pleasure of her hospitality brought friend and family together, creating cherished memories. If someone came as a stranger, they left as a friend. There was always room at her table for unexpected guests including her son’s SCUBA Class passing through Arabi on the way to the Florida Keys. Saras compassion and joy in life was felt by all who knew her.
She leaves behind her son Thomas O. Griffin and his wife Michele of Ocilla, Ga.; her step-children:

Griffin and his wife Michelle, Faye Griffin Miller and her husband Lamar, Debbie Mims and her husband David, Kristie Childers Hiner and her husband Glenn, Kim Childers, and Kirby Childers and his wife Karen; her step-daughter in-law: Angie Griffin; her siblings: Thelma Jean Collins of Macon, Ga., Marvin Wayne Stephens of Cordele, and Zara Stephens and his wife Sue of Warwick, Ga; her grandchildren: Thomas O. Griffin, III of Ocilla and Michael P. Griffin of Savannah, Ga.; and her step-grandchildren: John, Ashlie, Kimberly, Natalie, Christi, Chad, Allison, Lyndsey, Landon, Kari, Adam, Benjamin, Taylor, Claire, Nathan, and Kyle
Contributions in Sara’s memory may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 706 Antioch Rd, Cordele, Georgia 31015 Sara’s legacy of love, service, and kindness will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and community. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
