Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 earned “Honor Troop” recognition after a busy week at Summer Camp. The Troop spent the week of June 9-15, 2024 at Camp Sidney Dew, near Armuchee, Georgia, about 25 miles north of Rome.
Four boys and five adults attended camp this year. The Scouts were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Dalton Baker, and Simon Baker. The adults on the trip were Brady Atkins, Gene Baker, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, and David Wade.
The boys worked on a variety of merit badges, including Animal Science, Animation, Astronomy, Camping, Canoeing, Chemistry, Chess, Citizenship in the World, Communication, Disabilities Awareness, Farm Mechanics, First Aid, Geology, Leatherwork, Photography, Reptile & Amphibian Studies, Scouting Heritage, and Swimming. They worked on some of their rank advancement requirements.
In addition to going to classes, the boys were part of the color guard leading the flag-raising ceremony one morning. Scout Dalton Baker also delivered the Blessing before supper one evening. Both of those items helped the Troop earn the Honor Troop designation.
While the boys were busy going to classes, performing their own service, and having fun, the adults were busy helping out with various projects. Our Scouters performed 13-19 hours of service each during the week. In addition to wrangling Scouts, they helped:
* create a M*A*S*H*-like sign-post sign for the Camp Ranger
* removed a yucca plant that was blocking a trail
* painted more than a dozen campsite signs
* taught a Fire Safety merit badge class
* helped wash dishes one morning in the dining hall
* branded mugs for other campers one evening
Senior Patrol Leader Simon Baker received the Honor Troop streamer from Camp Commissioner Jacob Davis during the closing campfire on Friday evening. It will be displayed at the top of the Troop color staff with the Troop flag.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is chartered by the Cordele Kiwanis Club. If you know a boy, ages 11-17, who might like to “Live Scouting’s Adventure” or would benefit from learning leadership skills and service to others, please bring him by the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut, located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele. The Troop meets every Monday evening from 6:30-8:00.
