Summers credits state senate win to ‘team effort’

State Senator-elect Carden Summers of Cordele credited his win in Tuesday’s runoff election for the 13th District State Senate seat to the hard work and support of a broad spectrum of supporters throughout the nine-county district. Summer bested his opponent, former Leesburg mayor Jim Quinn, by a total vote of 6,273 (51.96 percent) to 5,799 (48.04 percent), according to unofficial numbers reported by the Georgia Secretary of State’s elections office.
“I couldn’t have done this by myself, and this is not about me in any way,” Summers said. “This was a total team effort and I’m grateful to so many people.”
Summers was the top vote-getter in seven of the district’s nine counties: Crisp (1,662-330), Dodge (595-388), Dooly (347-212), Tift (1,029-723), Turner (267-250), Wilcox (174-73), and Worth (1,380-457).
Quinn won big in his home county of Lee, where voters preferred him by a count of 3,098 ballots to Summers’ 601, but it wasn’t enough to win the seat. Quinn also took Sumter County 268-218.
Summers will be sworn in this week and then turn right around to qualify for re-election in the 2020 election.
