James Michael “Pete” Smith passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019 at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born in Turner County, he was the son of the late Lummie “Buzz” M. Smith, Jr. and Rebecca Ruth Roberts Smith.
“Pete” as he was affectionately known, loved the land and the outdoors and had a farmer’s heart. He had worked the farms along with family for a big portion of his life. He later went to work with ADS (Hancor) and had retired after 20 years. Pete was blessed with a beautiful personality and never met a stranger. He had a sweet smile and a word for everyone that he met, always trying to lift up someone else. Pete loved to fish with his friends in the Keys and take beach trips with his family. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Heavy metal was his choice in music and he loved attending concerts with his daughter, Jesse. He enjoyed life to the fullest but his biggest passion was his granddaughter, Emma.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Henderson Smith of Cordele; daughter, Jesse Smith of Cordele; two sisters, Stacey Smith Howe of Columbus and Kimberly Smith Victoria of St. Augustine, FL; and his granddaughter, Emma Straka. A private memorial service is planned for a later date. Arrangements are by Rainey Family Funeral Services. An online guest register is available at www.raineyfuneral.com.
