Funeral services were held for Alton B. Churchwell at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 1, 2019 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services. Rev. Stan Bowen conducted the service and Imogene Gilliam, pianist, played soft music for the processional and the recessional. Cliff Nipper accompanied himself on the guitar and sang “Peace In The Valley.” Pallbearers were Bobby Benson, David Posey, Tommy Stephens, Earle Jones, Mac Hancock and Sonny Dowell. A private committal service was held in Sunnyside Cemetery.
Alton, 76 of Cordele, passed away Friday evening, August 30, 2019 at his residence with his family by his side. Alton was born in Milledgeville and was the son of the late John Brackston and Pauline Veal Churchwell. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Irwin Perry Churchwell
Alton was the store manager for many years at Sherwin-Williams Paints. He served his God and his community all of his life. He was a very active member of Morningside Baptist Church where he served on the board of deacons, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and also served as church treasurer. He was the chairman of the arts and crafts committee of the annual Watermelon Days Festival in Cordele and was an active member of the Cordele Evening Lions Club for over 40 years. In the Lions Club he held positions of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. He was an outstanding athlete in high school and was the only young man to letter all four years of his high school career in track, football, baseball and basketball at Dooly County High School.
Alton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lana Weathers Churchwell; a son and his wife, Derek and Crissy Churchwell of Perry; a granddaughter, Samantha Churchwell of Perry; and his sister-in-love, Gail Helms of Cordele. Memorials to Morningside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 842, Cordele, Ga. 31015 would be appreciated by the family.
