Man dies after being struck by train

A 17-year-old Cordele resident is dead after he was struck by a train while walking along the tracks near the crossing at Greer Street between 13th Avenue and LaPorte Drive at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday.
Dennis Hestle, a student at Crisp County High School, was transported by EMS to Crisp Regional Hospital in critical condition. He passed away from his injuries at approximately 10:30 p.m., according to Cordele Police Department Captain Andrew Roufs.
CPD Chief Lewis Green said, “My investigators are continually working to determine how this happened. We are all saddened by this unfortunate loss of life.”
CPD asks that anyone who may have spoken with Hestle prior to the incident contact investigators at 229-276-2921.
A CSX train was headed west when it came in contact with Hestle, who was walking on or near the tracks when the incident occurred. No other details of the incident have been made public at this time.
