Cougars drop home matchup to Hawkinsville 7-0

CORDELE — Crisp County’s varsity baseball team fell to a defeat on their home field for just the first time this season when Hawkinsville came away with a 7-0 win in the Cougar Den on Friday night.

The two teams entered the seventh inning of the game still tied at 0-0 after the pitching for both had mostly shut down the opposing lineup over the first six frames.

Hawkinsville had the bases loaded with one out in the top half of the seventh following a single, a Cougar error, and a hit by pitch. The Red Devils subsequently put the first two runs of the game on the board using a two-run single from Tyler Meeks, and they later went on to score five more runs by way of three more base hits and another pair of Cougar errors.

Hawkinsville led 7-0 entering the bottom half of the seventh inning, and their starting pitcher, Hunter Prince, finished the game off for a complete game shutout victory by striking out three Cougar batters in the frame.

Crisp County’s Connor Richmond got the start on the mound in the contest and pitched four shutout innings while allowing just four Hawkinsville hits and striking out three batters.

In the Cougar batting lineup, Jack Carter and Noah Walters ended the game with one hit apiece, while Richmond and Cole Lancaster each recorded one walk.

The Cougars previously won the first contest between the two in Hawkinsville by a final score of 6-5 on February 25, meaning the teams split the season series with the visiting squad having won both contests.

The defeat brought Crisp County’s overall record to 7-5 on the season.

The Cougars are scheduled to host Lowndes County tomorrow night starting at 5:30 p.m. Later on in the week, CCHS will play a road game at Peach County on Wednesday at 5:30, before closing the week out with a double-header in Forsyth on Friday.

Crisp’s first contest on Friday will be against Howard High School starting at 4, with the Cougars scheduled to play a game against Mary Persons to follow at 7.

 

CA improves region record to 3-1 with win at Westwood

Crisp Academy’s varsity baseball team picked up their third region win of the season with a 10-6 victory on the road at Westwood on Friday afternoon.

Crisp put up the game’s first three runs early on in the contest and then scored six more in the top half of the fourth inning to jump out to a 9-0 lead.

Westwood later scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, and four in the fifth frame to bring the score to 9-5 in favor of CA after five innings of play.

Each team tacked on one more run during the last two frames to bring the final score to 10-6.

Crisp Academy opened the scoring in the top of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. Will Hubbard led off the game with a single, and later stole third base before scoring on a Griffin Gravitt RBI groundout.

CA later added two runs in the top half of the third inning. Noah Mercer led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on a Westwood error for the second run of the contest, and Baylor Pless pushed Crisp’s third run of the game across on a sacrifice fly that scored Hubbard. CA had a 3-0 lead going into the fourth inning.

The six run top of the fourth inning subsequently allowed Crisp Academy to take control of the contest. Spencer Stubbs provided a pair of the runs during the frame with a two-run home run to right field. A wild pitch would allow two more CA runs to score, and Griffin Gravitt pushed the last two runs of the inning across with a two-run single for a 9-0 lead.

Westwood closed the gap over the final few innings, but they were unable to cut the deficit to any closer than four runs, and CA finished on top by the final score of 10-6.

CA’s final run of the game came in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Pless that scored Hubbard.

The CA Wildcats ran their record to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in region competition with the 10-6 win over Westwood.

Crisp is scheduled to play an important home region game against Terrell Academy tomorrow starting at 4:30 p.m. CA will then play another home region game on next Tuesday afternoon against Windsor Academy, also at 4:30.

 

Wilcox falls at Atkinson in high-scoring region contest

The Wilcox County High School baseball team fell on the road against the Atkinson County Rebels by a final score of 10-9 on Friday night.

The Patriots had a 4-3 lead over the Rebels after the first four innings of play, but Atkinson outscored Wilcox 7-5 over the remainder of the contest to win the game by the 10-9 final score line.

Wilcox took an early lead in the game with a run in the top half of the first inning after a bases loaded walk by Lagan Luke sent Branson Owens to home plate.

The Patriots added on two more runs in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Brock White, followed by a wild pitch that allowed Rhett Davis to score.

Atkinson responded with their first run of the game in the bottom half of the second inning, but Wilcox extended their lead back out to three runs in the top of the third after Desmond Tisdol scored a run on an RBI hit from Bo Keene. Wilcox had a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the third.

The Rebels put two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the third to cut the Patriot lead to 4-3, which is where the score stayed up until the fifth inning.

Wilcox tacked on a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single to left field that scored Keene, but Atkinson County used four hits in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the contest at 7-5.

The Patriots then picked up a run in the top half of the sixth after Clark Gaines hit a one-out double and later scored on an Atkinson error, but the Rebels subsequently put up three more runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 10-6 lead into the seventh inning.

Wilcox fought back with three runs in the seventh inning, and had the potential game-tying run on base with two outs, but Atkinson held on for the region win by the final score of 10-9.

Davis and Owens both had RBI hits in the top of the seventh inning for the Patriots.

Wilcox will play a home game against Turner County tomorrow starting at 6 p.m. Following that, the Patriots will play a road game at Pelham on Saturday afternoon at 2.

 

Fullington splits weekend home games

The Fullington Academy Trojan baseball team played two home games over the weekend and split the contests. On Friday afternoon, the Trojans fell to Central Georgia Arts by a final score of 15-5, but the Trojans bounced back by coming up with a 10-0 win in a Saturday afternoon contest against the Westwood Wildcats.

In Friday’s game, Central Georgia Arts jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Fullington after two innings played, and they later outscored the Trojans 11-4 over the fifth and sixth frames to win the game by the 15-5 final score after six innings of play.

Avery Scarboro hit a second inning home run for the Trojans in the contest, and he finished the game with two hits, one walk, and an RBI.

Other Fullington batting lineup contributors in the contest: Hunter Hughes- two hits and two RBIs; Jack McLeod- two hits, one RBI and one run scored; Chase Smith- two hits and one run scored; Brooks Hendrix- one hit, one RBI and one run scored; Josh Hendrix- one hit and one walk; Carson Godfrey- one hit and one run scored.

On Saturday afternoon, the Trojans picked up their first win of the season by run ruling Westwood 10-0 after five innings of play in Pinehurst.

The Trojans scored one run in the bottom of the first, five in the second inning, and four in the third frame for their 10 total runs.

Godfrey led the Trojan batting order in the contest with two hits, two runs scored and four RBIs, while Scarboro recorded two hits and three RBIs.

Other Fullington batting lineup contributors in the win over Westwood: Blake Worley- two hits; McLeod- one hit, one RBI and one run scored; Smith- one hit, one RBI and two runs; Brooks Hendrix- one hit, one RBI, and one run scored; Shiloh Kehayes- one hit and one run; Hughes- two runs scored; Trey Miller- one run scored.

Worley started the game on the mound for the Trojans and went four shutout innings, in which he allowed just three hits, while walking two batters and striking out seven. Hughes pitched the final inning for Fullington to complete the shutout win.

The win over Westwood put the Trojans at 1-5 on the season overall.

Fullington is scheduled for two home games this week, one on Tuesday against region opponent Georgia Christian starting at 4:30 p.m., and then the other on Thursday against Terrell Academy.
