Wilcox baseball falls to Clinch County 12-3  

The Wilcox County High School baseball team dropped a home region contest against the Clinch County Panthers (7-2) on Tuesday night by a final score of 12-3.

Clinch went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning after a base runner scored on a passed ball, but Wilcox quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

After Rhett Davis reached base on a Panther error to start the bottom of the first, Wilcox County’s Branson Owens provided the run scoring hit with a one-out two-run home run to left field, giving the Patriots the lead at 2-1.

Clinch took control of the game shortly after with a six run top of the second inning, using three hits and five walks.

The Panthers had a 7-2 lead after the second inning, and subsequently tacked on five more runs over the last four frames to go up 12-2 entering the bottom of the seventh.

Wilcox put the final run of the game on the scoreboard in the seventh inning to bring the final score to 12-3 in favor of Clinch County.

Cameron Coleman drew a walk to begin the bottom of the seventh, and he scored the last Wilcox run of the game shortly after on an RBI groundout by Owens.

Owens finished the game with one hit, three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Patriot batting lineup in the contest. Davis, Brock White, Lagan Luke, and Desmond Tisdol each finished the game with one hit apiece.

The defeat put the Patriots at 1-4 so far on the season.

The Patriots are scheduled to play a road game at Atkinson County tonight starting at 6 p.m. The next Wilcox home game will be on Tuesday against Turner County at 6 p.m.

 

Wednesday, March 6

Crisp County falls at Tiftarea Academy 6-0 

Crisp County’s varsity baseball team made a trip down to Chula on Wednesday to take on an unbeaten Tiftarea Academy team. The Tiftarea Panthers (7-0) defeated the Cougars (7-4) in the contest by a final score of 6-0.

The game was scoreless up until the Panthers pushed across the first run in the bottom of the third. TA later tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fifth, and one run in the bottom of the sixth for the final score of 6-0.

Tiftarea’s pitching staff kept the Cougars off the bases for the majority of the game, as Crisp County only managed two hits and three walks, plus a pair of hit batters throughout the game.

Hayden Murphy pitched six shutout innings in the game for the Panthers, and Will Weeks held the Cougars off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to finish the shutout.

Jack Carter and Cade Jolly accounted for the only two Cougar hits in the contest.

Toby Stripling got the start on the mound for CCHS and pitched three innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and three walks, while striking out three TA batters. Connor Richmond and Cole Lancaster pitched the remaining three innings for Crisp.

The Cougars play a home game against Hawkinsville tonight beginning at 6 p.m.

Crisp will then Lowndes County on Tuesday with first pitch set for 5:30.

Crisp County and Tiftarea are scheduled to play a rematch in Cordele on Friday, April 5.

 

Fullington Trojans fall to Southland 10-5

The Fullington Academy Trojans dropped a home game against the Southland Academy Raiders by a final score of 10-5 on Wednesday afternoon.

Southland put up the first run of the game in the top of the first inning and added two more in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead entering the bottom half of the third.

The Trojans then responded with four runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Jack McLeod led off the bottom of the third frame by reaching base on an error and Chase Smith subsequently picked up a base hit to put two Fullington runners on base. Hunter Hughes then knocked in the first Trojan run of the game with an RBI single that sent McLeod to home plate. Fullington loaded the bases shortly after when Trey Miller reached after being hit by a pitch. Avery Scarboro came up with a two-run double in the subsequent at-bat to tie the score at 3-3. Blake Worley was credited with an RBI on a fielder’s choice groundout later on in the frame for Fullington’s fourth run of the game.

The Raiders retook the lead at 8-4 in the top of the fifth inning after scoring five runs, and they later added on two more in the top of the seventh inning to take a 10-4 lead into the bottom half.

Fullington scored the game’s last run in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI walk by Rivers Smith, leaving the final score at 10-5 in favor of Southland.

Batting lineup contributors for the Trojans in the contest: Hughes- two hits, one RBI, and one run scored; Scarboro- one hit, one walk, and two RBIs; Chase Smith- one hit, one walk, and one run scored; Josh Hendrix- four walks; Worley- one hit and one RBI; Rivers Smith- two walks and one RBI; Miller- one walk and two runs scored; McLeod- one run scored.

The Trojans play today against Central Geargia Arts. They are also scheduled to play a home game against Westwood tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Following this weekend’s contests, Fullington is scheduled for a home game against Robert Toombs on Monday at 4 p.m.

 

Thursday, March 7

Terrell deals CA Wildcats first loss of season

Crisp Academy’s varsity baseball Wildcats lost for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon at Terrell Academy by a 5-0 score line.

The Wildcats started the season with three straight wins, including two wins over region rivals, but the Terrell Academy Eagles took down the CA in an important early-season GISA 3-AA matchup.

Baylor Pless got the start on the mound for CA and he held the Eagles off the board over the first four innings.

Terrell later scored the first run of the game on a solo home run from Garrett Sloan in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Eagles went on to tack on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 5-0 final score.

Sloan pitched six shutout innings against the Wildcats, and a Terrell relief pitcher pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to keep CA off the scoreboard.

Pless ended up pitching five and a third innings, in which he allowed four Terrell runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out seven.

In the CA batting lineup, Dylan Farmer finished the game with two hits, while Griffin Gravitt, Garrett Gravitt, Julian Floyd, and Noah Mercer each had one apiece.

With the defeat, CA fell to 3-1 overall on the season with a 2-1 mark in region competition.

Crisp is on the road for another region game today at Westwood.

CA will host Terrell for a rematch on Tuesday afternoon in Cordele starting at 4:30 p.m.
