All of the area high school basketball teams have now finished up their regular season and region tournament schedules with the conclusion of this past week’s games, and six local teams are now preparing for state tournament play.

Crisp County:

The Crisp County Cougars (11-12 record entering the playoffs) finished up their regular season with a region 1-AAA championship by defeating Worth County 61-56 last Tuesday night in Cordele.

The Cougars will be hosting a playoff game against Kendrick High School of Columbus for the first round of the GHSA AAA state playoffs on Saturday afternoon.

The Kendrick Cherokees will bring an overall record of 17-10 into Saturday’s first round playoff game against the Cougars.

The Cherokees held their own in a tough region 4-AAA this year, finishing the regular season as the third seed out of seven teams in their region. Kendrick fell to eventual region 4-AAA runner-up, Westside Macon, in their region semifinals last week and they later fell to Jackson High School in the third place game to fall to the fourth seed out of the region.

Crisp and Kendrick are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Den.

Crisp Academy:

The Crisp Academy varsity basketball teams were both in action at the GISA 3-AA tournament last week.

The Wildcats (17-5) lost in the region semifinals on Thursday night to Windsor Academy by a final score of 80-57. CA subsequently bounced back to defeat the Southwest Georgia Academy Warriors in a close game by a score of 55-53 to finish the tournament in third place.

The Wildcats will enter the state playoffs as a three seed and will open up against the second seeded team out of region 1-AA, Solid Rock Academy on Wednesday night.

CA’s four team group for the first round of state will hosted by the champion from region 4-AA, Edmund Burke Academy, meaning the Wildcats will play Solid Rock in Waynesboro on Wednesday night starting at 6 p.m.

A win for CA in the first round would see the Wildcats play in the quarterfinals in Macon on Saturday night.

The Lady Wildcats (4-17) fell to SGA 48-10 last Tuesday night in the region 3-AA play-in game, which ended the CA girls’ season.

Wilcox County:

Both of Wilcox County High School’s varsity basketball teams saw their region tournament runs come to an end in the semifinal round in Rochelle on Friday.

The Lady Patriots (16-10) defeated Echols County 60-51 in last Wednesday night’s quarterfinal round before falling to Clinch County on Friday by a final score of 61-56.

The Patriots fell to Clinch County later on in the night by a final score of 74-69.

Both Wilcox teams finished with good positioning in the GHSA class A playoff rankings, and they will each start out the state tournament with a home playoff game.

The Lady Patriots will host Elite Scholars Academy (13-15) in first round playoff action on Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Patriots earned a first round bye and will begin state tournament play with a home game in the second round of state, which is scheduled to take place February 20-21. The Patriots’ opponent for the second round will be the winner of this weekend’s first round matchup between Macon County and Manchester.

Dooly County:

Dooly County High School’s varsity basketball teams both qualified for the GHSA class A tournament as well, and they are scheduled to play home playoff games this weekend.

Dooly County’s boys’ team (17-8) fell to Greenville High School in the region 4-A quarterfinals on Thursday night in Vienna by a final score of 61-54, while the Lady Bobcats (18-6) fell in Friday night’s region semifinals against Greenville 58-55.

The Lady Bobcats will host Stewart County (12-8) on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Vienna in the first round of the class A playoffs, while the Bobcats will play Lanier County (15-10) in first round state tournament action following the conclusion of the girls’ game on Saturday.

Fullington Academy:

Fullington Academy’s varsity basketball teams both had their season come to an end in the GICAA Division 1-A region four tournament hosted by Georgia Christian School last week.

The Fullington Lady Trojans (4-19) fell to Grace Christian Academy in the region play-in game on Monday night, while the Trojans (6-17) fell to Citizens Christian Academy 50-46 in the region semifinals on Tuesday night before dropping the consolation game with a playoff spot on the line against GCA by a final score of 78-71.
