Cougars to play Worth County for region 1-AAA basketball championship on Tuesday following Monroe forfeits 

Crisp County High School’s region, GHSA region 1-AAA, which consists of just four schools (Crisp, Worth County, Cook County, and Monroe High), saw a complete shakeup in the boys’ standings on Thursday when the Dougherty County School System announced that Monroe Comprehensive High School was forfeiting wins from their 2018-2019 basketball season due to an academically ineligible player having participated during this season.

Monroe had previously locked up the region title with a 76-51 win over the Cougars on January 22 in Albany followed by a win over Worth County later that week. Before having to forfeit, the Monroe Tornadoes had put together an 8-0 record within region 1-AAA and they were set to enter the playoffs as the number one seed from the region. The Tornadoes will now miss out on the postseason.

The Cougars would have previously entered tonight’s scheduled game against Monroe in Cordele with a 4-3 record in region play, but the two overturned defeats against Monroe from earlier in the season made the Cougars 6-1 in region play going into tonight’s game.

Regardless of tonight’s result against Monroe, the CCHS boys will play their regularly scheduled final regular season game against Worth County this coming Tuesday for the now up for grabs region 1-AAA title. The Crisp and Worth game this coming Tuesday night would have previously been for the two seed in region 1-AAA if not for the Monroe forfeits.

Crisp and Worth split their two boys’ varsity games earlier in the season with the home team taking each meeting. Crisp knocked off Worth County in Cordele 55-39 on January 15, while the Rams won in Sylvester 59-48 last Friday night.

The girls’ varsity game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in Cordele this Tuesday night, and the boys’ varsity teams will play later that night for the region title.

Cook County finished first in the region on the girls’ side with a 9-0 mark in league play, with the Crisp County Lady Cougars (1- 20 and 0-7 in region play entering tonight’s game against Monroe) in fourth place in the 1-AAA standings.

The CCHS and Monroe girls’ game tips off tonight at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game still scheduled to follow.

 

Crisp Academy: 

CA will be taking part in the GISA region 3-AA basketball tournament hosted by Terrell Academy next week.

The CA Lady Wildcats (4-15 record entering tonight’s home game against Deerfield) will play Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Dawson in a first round region tournament game against the Southwest Georgia Academy Lady Warriors (11-9) for a spot in the region semifinals.

The Lady Cats fell to SGA in both regular season matchups this season, 62-39 in favor of SGA in Damascus back in mid-December, and 45-32 for the Lady Warriors on Friday, January 25.

A Lady Wildcat win over SGA would set them up to play in the region 3-AA semifinals on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

An opponent and time has not yet been determined for Crisp Academy’s boys’ varsity team (15-4 record entering tonight’s game against the Deerfield-Windsor Knights) since the other four teams in 3-AA play matchups within the region tonight, and those results still have a chance to cause a big impact on the final tournament seeding.

The most likely scenario for the Wildcats, depending on those other results, has them in as the second seed after finishing 6-2 in region play. Another scenario could still see them grab the one seed, but that would require an upset victory by Westwood over Terrell tonight, and subsequently a tie-breaking coin flip to decide the one seed to go in CA’s favor.

In the aforementioned most likely scenario where CA finished as the two seed, they would play either SGA or Windsor on Thursday afternoon at 5:30 in Dawson for a spot in Friday’s region title game.

CA and SGA split their regular season matchups, with the hosts taking the win in both contests. SGA won the game between the two in Damascus 73-64 in December, while CA took the win by a score of 68-62 in the meeting in Cordele last month.

The Wildcats swept Windsor in the regular season with an 80-72 win in Macon and a 62-60 win in Cordele.

 

Wilcox County:

Wilcox County’s boys’ varsity team plays a very important rematch against Irwin County tonight in Rochelle with the number one seed in GHSA region 2-A on the line. The number one seed out of region 2-A will be the host for both the girls’ and the boys’ region competitions. Wilcox and Irwin are tied atop the regular season league standings at 13-1 going into tonight’s game. Irwin comes into the game tonight with the tie-breaking win, having beaten the Patriots in Ocilla 73-66 earlier this season, but a Patriot win tonight would put them ahead of Irwin in the win column.

The Wilcox Lady Patriots are also scheduled to play Irwin tonight and they enter the game as the number three team in their region standings with a 10-4 record. Telfair County has locked up the number one spot in the girls’ regular season standings in region 2-A with a 14-0 mark, and Clinch County is second with an 11-3 record in region play entering this weekend’s schedule.

Wilcox County’s teams close out their regular season schedules with home games against Turner County tomorrow night starting with the girls’ game at 7 p.m. Depending on results from this weekend’s games, the Lady Patriots can possibly still climb as high as the second seed in the regular season region standings.

Ultimately the GHSA power rankings determine which teams make it into the playoffs in class A, and both Wilcox teams were in good position entering this weekend’s contests. The Patriots were ranked at number three in the most recent power rankings, while the Lady Patriots were ranked number 12 on the girls’ side.

The top 24 teams in the rankings make it into the class A playoffs after region tournaments are complete.

The region 2-A tournament picture will be made clear with the completion of this weekend’s games.

 

Dooly County:

Dooly County’s teams are also both in good shape as far as region standings and class A playoff positioning.

The Dooly County Lady Bobcats have accumulated a record of 17-5 overall and 11-3 in region to take command of their sub-region standings going into tonight’s home region game against Taylor County.

The Bobcats also have posted an 11-3 region mark this season entering this weekend, and they have put up an overall record of 16-7 going into their final regular season game tonight at home against Taylor County starting at 7:30 p.m.

Several of the schools in Dooly’s region still have league contests this weekend that have the chance to potentially affect the region seeding slightly going into next week’s tournaments.

The Bobcats were in the number 13 spot in the GHSA class A power rankings coming into this weekend and the Lady Bobcats were at number 11.

 

Fullington Academy:

Fullington Academy’s basketball teams play their final games of the regular season tonight at home against region rival Grace Christian Academy, and there is a lot still on the line for the Trojans.

Fullington’s boys’ team (5-14 overall, 2-5 in region) go into tonight’s game sitting at the four seed in GICAA division 1-A region 4 behind GCA (7-8, 2-5) due to having lost the first matchup between the two earlier this season. Since they both have an equal region record coming into tonight’s game, the winner will take the three seed and the losing team gets the four. The four seed plays a play-in game against the five seed, Georgia Christian School, on Monday night at GCS starting at 6 p.m. The three seed skips straight ahead to the region semifinals to play the second seeded team (Citizens Christian Academy) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Georgia Christian.

The Lady Trojans (4-17, 0-7 in region entering tonight’s game) are locked in as the five seed in D-1A-R4. Regardless of tonight’s result against Grace Christian Academy in Pinehurst, the Lady Trojans will turn right back around and play against GCA in Monday night’s region play-in game at Georgia Christian School starting at 5 p.m. The winner of the play-in game will then play in the semifinals against the one seed, Citizens Christian Academy, on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for a spot in the championship game.
