Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is celebrating its thirty-fifth year in 2015 and is looking to add new Scouts to our roster. The Troop was founded in October 1990 by current Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell, who served as the first Scoutmaster, and his wife Renae, who served as Assistant Scoutmaster.
Over one hundred sixty boys are known to have been members of the Troop since its inception. Thirty-five have attained the rank of Eagle Scout, well above the national average of 6% of Scouts earn who the rank. The first Eagle Scout from Troop 270 was Douglas Beck, in 1997.
Nine men have held the position of Scoutmaster for Troop 270. Following Fennell were Bill Stewart, Jim Mitchell, Bo Slenker, T.J. Garten, Robert Lingefelt, Chris Chappell, Robert Sears, and our current Scoutmaster, John Frost.
Scores of other adults have served as mentors for the boys, filling the positions of Assistant Scoutmaster, Charter Organization Representative, Troop Committee Chair, and Troop Committee Member. Adults currently holding those positions include Brady Atkins, Gene Baker, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, Jody Fletcher, Lee Frost, Mary Phillips, and David Wade.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is youth led. The ranking youth is Senior Patrol Leader Jacob Frost. He leads the other boys with help from the Patrol Leaders’ Council, which meets monthly to determine Troop Activities. Current Members of the Troop include Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, Gabe Browning, Jacob Frost, Riley Herrick, Mason Phillips, and Jensen Wade
Troop 270 maintains an active schedule of service, camping, and other events.
Service events have included directing parking at the National Grits Festival, placing flags on graves at Andersonville National Cemetery, Civil War grave marking in Fitzgerald, Frontier Heritage Days, Webelos Rendezvous, Cub Family Weekend, Cordele Christmas and Watermelon Parades, Thanksgiving Food Distribution, Georgia Peanut Festival, and Council Fundraisers. We retire flags twice a year, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
We try to camp monthly. Camping opportunities have included Fort McAllister, Olustee Battlefield, Camp Osborn, Camp Patten, Creighton Island, and the Sportsman’s Club, as well as private property when the opportunity has presented itself. Last year, the guys had the opportunity to stay on the World War II aircraft carrier Yorktown. Over the years, we have camped in 30 of Georgia’s 159 counties and at dozens of sites in neighboring states. The Troop has attended Summer Camp every year, except for 2020, when most Councils cancelled their camps. In recent years, the local Scouts have attended Summer Camp at camps Bert Adams, Sidney Dew, Old Indian, Osborn, Rainey Mountain, and Woodruff. The Troop is scheduled to return to Camp Old Indian this year. It’s near Traveler’s Rest, SC.
Other activities have included Scout Sunday Service, Boston Butt sales and cookings, recruiting at the Central Georgia Fair, kayaking on the Flint River, visiting historic battlefields and other sites. and Macon Mayhem Hockey games. In fact, our 10th Annual Send My Butt To Camp” Boston Butt Sale started this week. It will run through May 12. The Butts will be cooked at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut and will be ready for pickup on Friday, May 23.
If you know a boy, ages 11-17, who would like to “Live Scouting’s Adventure” or would benefit from the leadership and service opportunities offered by our program we’d love to have him join our Troop. Please bring him to the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut most any Monday evening from 6:30-8:00. The Hut is located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele.
