South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently hosted a financial literacy workshop titled “Building Financial Literacy for the College Student” at the Crisp Center Campus, providing students with valuable insights on managing their finances and preparing for future success.
The event, organized by SGTC Career Services Director Cynthia Carter, featured guest speakers Wallace Keese, TRIO/Educational Talent Search Director at Fort Valley State University, and Carl M. Reid II, Workforce Development professional. The workshop focused on practical money management skills, financial planning, and professional development to help students make informed decisions about their financial futures.
Students participated in interactive discussions on budgeting, credit management, and financial responsibility. Speakers emphasized the importance of tracking daily expenses, setting up emergency funds, and avoiding unnecessary debt—especially credit card debt, which can quickly spiral out of control due to high interest rates. Attendees were advised to pay off balances in full each month, make timely payments, and use credit wisely to build a strong financial foundation.
Beyond financial planning, the workshop also covered professional development topics, including interview techniques, workplace etiquette, and the importance of soft skills in communication and career advancement. Students were encouraged to develop a professional profile, dress appropriately for job interviews, and exhibit confidence in their interactions. The session reinforced the 3Cs of success: character, courage, and commitment, stressing that proper preparation prevents poor performance.
SGTC Career Services provides a range of career readiness workshops, financial literacy sessions, and professional development opportunities to help students achieve their personal and career goals.
