Helen Powers Newsome died Friday, March 7, 2025, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Newsome was born in the Pleasant View Community to the late Ambers James Powers and Bertha Lorena Johns Powers. She is also preceded in death by her sisters: Elweita Schultz, Tina Stephens, and Lorena Griffin; and her brothers: James Powers and Paul Powers.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 pm, on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the church on the day of the service beginning at 2:00 pm. Rev. Jimmy Black officiated the service and Stephanie Powers played the piano. Amber Posey played the guitar and sang “In The Garden” and “I’ll Fly Away” accompanied by her daughters: Molly, Lilly, and Ruby Posey. Serving as pallbearers were: Randy Coffee, Drew Morris, Freddy Thompson, Stephen Coon, Chris Morris, Peyton Ethridge, and Stanley Stephens. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Steve Wright, Vic Little, Jason Ellis, Dr. Ellis Evans, and Sam Crenshaw.
Mrs. Newsome was a dedicated Christian and devoted member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir. She worked briefly at Sears in Cordele early on in her marriage. Mrs. Newsome shared her talents, artistic and creative, by participating in the Hatley Homemakers Club. She won many blue ribbons for her exhibits at the Cordele Lion’s Club Fair each year.
Mrs. Newsome is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years, Alec Newsome of Cordele; her son, Doug Newsome and his wife Barbara of Eatonton, Ga.; a brother, Wayne Powers and his wife Cathy of Swainsboro, Ga.; a sister, Jean Sheridan of Chesapeake Bay, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Sandra Jackson, Nell Thomas, and Faye Walker for their excellent care and love to her and the entire family day after day, showing so much kindness for many years, and always going the “extra mile.”
