Barbara Sue Jones, age 84, died Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Crisp Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, February 23, 2025, at Hughes & Wright Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Black officiating. Wesley McPherson and Steve McPherson sang “Amazing Grace” a cappella. Burial followed at Sunnyside Cemetery.
A proud Oklahoman, Barbara was born in Lawton to Melvin Ray Vaughan and Elsie Martin. She was preceded in death by her sister, Melva Rae Vaughan. Barbara dedicated much of her career to serving others, retiring as an administrative secretary for the Crisp County Board of Education. She also worked as a secretary at Cordele First Baptist Church and previously at Fort Sill. A member of Morningside Baptist Church and a former member of Cordele First Baptist Church.
Barbara was known for her exceptional cooking, especially her legendary cheese straws and pound cakes. She deeply loved her family and friends, cherishing time spent with her grandchildren. A passionate Georgia Bulldogs football fan, she took every loss to heart.
Barbara leaves behind her husband Earle P. Jones of Cordele; her children Shannon Johnson of San Marcos, California, Britt Johnson and his fiancé Kristen Deitrick of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Shelley Johnson of Braselton, Georgia, Tom Jones and his wife Cindy of Gray, Georgia, and Lori McPherson and her husband Steve of Augusta, Georgia, her nine grandchildren Gordon, Caleb, Lucas, Jace, Gavin, Ethan, Brian, Carolyn, and Wesley; and her great-grandchild Wren.
