Snow began falling in light flurries a little before 1 pm on January 21. Schools closed, and authorities urged motorists to stay off roads.

EMA Director and Fire Chief Jerry Harmon gave an update at 6:15, estimating around 2 inches had fallen in the Americus area. The Cordele Dispatch reports 4 inches. Harmon stated 4 wrecks have occurred in the last hour due to iced roads in Sumter. Harmon cautions drivers to enjoy the snow from home and stay off the roads. As temperatures drop overnight, icing is expected to increase, which will cripple emergency services by restricting their ability to respond.

For those seeking shelter in Americus, Calvary Episcopal has shelter available tonight and tomorrow. First Baptist Church on Lee Street plans on opening up shelter to those in need on Thursday and Friday. It is also recommended that people let their faucets drip to avoid frozen pipes.

So far, a few have taken Harmon’s advice and enjoyed the snow from home, donning coats and venturing out onto the thick blanket that coats fields and lawns. Several have curiously peered outside, gazing in wonder at the falling flakes from the safety of front yards. A few snowball fights have already ensued, with the quick accumulation on parked cars providing ample ammunition. At least one short snow man has materialized. Snow continues to fall after daylight has vanished, leaving residents to dream of the wintery landscape that will await them at dawn.
