The Wilcox County Board of Education is pleased to announce Nathan Gibbs as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent of Schools. Gibbs will be replacing Superintendent Dale Garnto, who is retiring after 32 years in education with the last 10 years in Wilcox County. A native of Wilcox County and a 1990 graduate of Wilcox County High School, Nathan brings an impressive 24 years of experience in education and a strong commitment to the success of students, families, and educators in our community.

Before transitioning into education, Nathan worked for five years as an investigator with the Department of Family and Children Services. He also served as the Georgia Fatherhood Specialist at East Central Technical College (WGTC) for one year. Additionally, he taught PC application courses at night for WGTC at the Wilcox Campus. These roles equipped him with an in-depth understanding of the importance of community support and the holistic needs of students and families.

Nathan began his educational career in 2002 when he enrolled in the Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program and was employed by Dooly County Elementary School, where he taught 3rd and 4th-grade math, reading, and English/language arts. After completing the GTAPP program, he was hired at Wilcox County Elementary School in 2004 to teach 5th-grade math, reading, English/language arts, and physical education.

In 2007, Nathan became the High School Counselor, a position he held until 2013. From 2006 to 2013, Nathan served as the assistant middle school football coach and the head middle school boys/girls golf coach. He also served as the assistant varsity baseball coach for four years.

From 2013 to 2017, Nathan served as an assistant principal for Wilcox County Middle/High School, where he helped shape the learning environment and supported the academic success of students through an emphasis on school improvement. In 2017, Nathan was promoted to a position at the Board Office as the Director of Curriculum, Assessments, RTI/504 programs, Pre-K, and Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs. In January 2022, he was promoted to the role of Assistant Superintendent, where he focused on Pre-K programs, facilities, school safety, tribunal hearing officer duties, CTAE, and ARP/CARES grants.

Throughout his 24-year career in education, Nathan has shown a passion for advancing educational opportunities for students, ensuring their safety, and building strong, collaborative relationships with staff, students, and the community.

“I am honored to be selected as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent and look forward to working with all of our dedicated educators and families to continue fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for our students,” said Nathan. “Together, we can achieve excellence in academics, and create opportunities for every child to succeed.”
