Walter LaRoy Shirah, age 82 of Cordele, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at his residence. Born in Rochelle, Wilcox County he was the son of the late Willie Lee Shirah and Ada Louise Stubbs Shirah. LaRoy retired after nearly 60 years with Harris Waste Management as the Chief of the Engineering Department. LaRoy served his country honorably with the United States Army. He was an avid fisherman, and would fish anywhere he had the opportunity to wet a hook. He and his family’s favorite place was Angler’s Paradise in Crescent City, FL. They spent many hours of vacation time there, making lots of happy memories. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping. Going to the beach soaking up the sun, and playing on his computer also made him a very happy man . The closest thing to his heart though was his family, especially his grandchildren and the time he was able to spend with them. LaRoy is survived by wife of 62 years, Wanda Oliver Shirah of Cordele; two children, LaGail Lewis and Michael LaRoy Shirah, both of Cordele; two grandchildren Brittany Smith (Jebb) of Pineview and Scottie Lewis of Cordele; and three great-grandchildren, Byron Lewis of Leesburg and Oliver Smith and Ada Smith, both of Pineview. A service to celebrate the life he lived will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 5, 2024 at the graveside at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will speak with friends immediately following the service. Memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital would please the family. Arrangements are by Rainey Family Funeral Services.
