Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

On November 14, 2024 around 12:00 P.M., a Crisp County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traffic stop on a red Nissan Altima for a traffic violation. The stop was conducted in the 500 block of West 21st Ave. The deputy observed the driver pass a bag from the back seat to the passenger. After the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger, Demarion Smith immediately exited the vehicle with a backpack. Smith had a strong odor of raw marijuana coming from his person. Smith was also found to be in possession of two handguns, one in his waist band and the other in a front pants pocket. Smith was taken into custody without incident. When backup units arrived the driver, Rontavious Lester was also taken into custody.
A search of the backpack and vehicle resulted in the discovery of multiple bags of suspected marijuana, cash, digital scales and baggies often used in the distribution of illegal substances.
Both Smith and Lester were transported to the Crisp County Detention center.
Damarion Smith is charged with 2 Counts of Possession of a Firearm during Commission of a Crime and Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute.
Rontavious Lester is charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute.
The investigation is ongoing with further charges pending.
