The Crisp County Power Commission has been serving this community for about 100 years and they are still coming up with new ways of showing how important they are to the residents of Crisp County. They just held their second annual golf tournament at the Lake Blackshear Resort and it was a resounding success. Now in this case, the beneficiary was the Crisp Regional Hospital but in fact it is the people of Cordele and Crisp County who will directly benefit from that 11,000-dollar check. This isn’t the first time Crisp County Power has given back to the community, and it won’t be the last. This golf tournament to raise awareness of Breast Cancer Month in conjunction with the American Public Power Association is yet another example of how things are done in Crisp County.
The Crisp County Power Commission was formed by an amendment to the Georgia State Constitution in 1925 at the request of the citizens of Crisp County to develop hydro-electric power on the Flint River. Power from this development was first generated in 1930. T that time, rural areas of Crisp County had no electrical service at all. Crisp County has been keeping the lights on ever since. The power commission currently serves about 12,000 meters using a network of approximately 850 miles of distribution lines.
Crisp Regional Medical Center was tickled pink to receive such a large check from the power commission. They intend to use the proceeds of this check in their oncology department. This money also brings to light the work done by medical professional around the country working tirelessly to defeat breast cancer. This work is vital to women’s health as over 325,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
The second annual golf tournament held at the Lake Blackshear Resort was held specifically to bring awareness to Breast Cancer Awareness month. The demand for tickets was overwhelming. According to Tim Powers, Foundation Director at Crisp County Regional Hospital, they had as many participants as they could handle. Chris Hewitt from Crisp County Power was very passionate about raising funds for the oncology department. He also added; We chose to partner with Crisp Regional to raise money for the oncology department through the charity golf tournament because cancer treatment requires substantial resources, and supporting this cause allows us to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives. By joining forces, we can raise vital funds to improve patient care, advance treatment options, and provide hope to those affected by cancer in our community. The tournament winners were, 1st: Team Woodford Plywood 2nd: Team Hunt Brothers, and 3rd: Team Consolidated Electrical Distributors. The oncology department has been treating about 300 patients per year.
