John Mark Childree, 71, of Cordele passed away on October 12, 2024 after an extended illness. Born in Fitzgerald, he lived a fulfilling life marked by his service, family, and interests
Mark dedicated 20 years to the United States Navy, serving from 1972 until 1992. Upon retirement from the military, he transitioned to civilian life and worked at Lowe’s for many years, where he was well-regarded by his colleagues and customers alike.
Mark loved God and his country. He enjoyed playing his guitar and was passionate about music. Known for his happy-go-lucky demeanor and to always be there to help anyone in need, Mark found joy in simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing, and could often be found playing word games or watching game shows. His love for traveling was only matched by his passion for riding his John Deere tractor and cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs. John also had a special place in his heart for his three cats, who were his constant companions. While he and Paula had many treasured memories with their family, they also had many with Bobby and Brenda, their dear friends and neighbors.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Paula Deason-Russ Childree; daughter, Cindy Bishop of Warwick; son, Kevin Childree (Kelly) of Savannah; brother, Warren Edwin Childree (Karen) of Titusville, FL; and sister-in-law, Rene Bohler Childree of Brooklet; step-daughters, Lily Katie Morgan (Joey) of Savannah, Ruby Russ of Milledgeville and Cindy Sandusky (Kyle) of Denver, CO. He was a proud grandfather to Dakota Russ, Rownin Sandusky, Kadee Gladney Wright (John), Tyler Gladney (Stephanie), Abby Gladney, Cole Bishop, and Matthew Childree; and great-grandfather to Logan Allen, Carson Allen, Kate Gladney, and Dreyton Buffington. His nieces, Nikki Rhodes, Staci Wolski, and Jeanna Conner, and nephew, Jonathan, also survive him.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Johnie Rubin Childree; mother, Loutrelle Elizabeth Childree; and brother, James David Childree.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2024 at Sunnyside Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service Thursday beginning at 10:00. Donations to woundedwarriorsproject.org would please the family.
