Adult leaders for Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 conducted the first cooking test for the Troop’s new grill, which was constructed from a 1000-gallon propane cylinder. The test entailed smoking 20 chicken halves and two pounds of bacon.
The purpose of the test was two-fold. First, we wanted to see how well the grill cooks. Does it get enough air? Does it maintain constant heat? The second reason for the test was to season the cooker.
Both tests were successful. The chicken halves were smoked to perfection in about an hour and a half. The bacon (our late-morning snack) was done in about thirty minutes. The combination of bacon and chicken fat did a great job seasoning the grates.
We are now about nine weeks out from our “Butt Kickin’ Butt Cookin’,” the culmination of our annual “Send My Butt To Camp” fundraiser. Tickets will be available from our Scouts and Scouters, beginning April 29.
Troop 270 will be attending Summer Camp at Camp Sidney Dew, near Armuchee, Georgia, north of Rome. The cost for Camp this year is $350 per Scout. The Boston Butt sale helps offset this cost.
