Crisp County Commission Meeting March 12, 2024

Crisp County board of Commission met on August 8, 2023 at 9 am at the Crisp County Government Center. Chairman James R. Dowdy, III called the meeting to order welcoming everyone. The invocation was given and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Clark Harrell. The agenda was adopted and the board approved last meetings minute. The meeting started with an update from Sheriff Billy Hancock, he spoke on the flash flooding that occurred on Saturday morning. People throughout the Sheriff’s Office, Crisp County Commission, Public Works, City of Cordele and Emergency Management came together at the early hours of Saturday morning to go around the community and analyze the damage that occurred. They help people stuck on cars and closed roads that were washed out. He announced that the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center are fully staffed; they have two employees that will be on military leave for service this year and they will be holding their position for when they get back. The shooting range is almost complete, they plan to have a ribbon cutting for it at the end of March or beginning of April. He did note that this range was not paid from taxpayers’ money; they received grants and used forfeiture funding to build the facility. James Volz a citizen of Crisp County came forward with concerns with the garbage pick-up and Internet services in the rural parts of the county. He mentioned that since the first of the year the trash pick-up has not been consistent and there has been changes made with what they will pick-up. Additionally, the there is not a strong reliable Internet service in the rural areas of the community and he says that’s this is taking a toll on the children in the community. He currently has Hughes Net, which is hit and miss along with a Verizon jetpack. Neither provider is reliable and cut in and out.

There was a public hearing for the Meadow Park Street & Drainage Improvement Phase III. This public hearing is required for the closing of this grant project. No comments from the public were made.

County Administrator spoke on new business that included road-restriping quotes which they received a few businesses bid to complete this job. They chose to award the job to Midstate. The second part of new business was to chose a voting delegate for the Georgia Opioid Settlement, which Clark nominated Jerome Outlaw to represent the county for this matter due to Jerome’s experience with EMS and Sheriff’s Office. This was moved, second and approved anonymously by the commissioners. Last part of new business was resolution 2024-003 Contract Agreement GDOT 0016112 which is regards to a contract agreement with GDOT with moving water lines owned by Crisp County in Sumter County for a round a bout that will be built on 280 in Sumter. This item was moved, second and adopted anonymously.

We then heard from Finance Director, Sherrie Leverett with an update on County Finances. County Administrator, Clark Harrell followed with his report.
