Funeral services for James E. Wright, Sr., 95 of Cordele, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. August 31, 2019 at Vienna Church of God. The committal service will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
James, affectionately known as “Papa Wright” passed away Monday, August 26, 2019 at Fellowship Home of Cordelia Manor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Mae Musselwhite Wright, a grandson, Bobby Gene “B.J.” Wright, Jr. and several siblings. He was born in Aiken, S.C. and was the son of the late Lloyd Wright and Alice Thomas Wright.
James was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II. He was retired from Georgia Pacific and was an active member of Vienna Church of God. James was a devout Christian and devoted his life to the Lord that he loved. He was a talented musician, playing many stringed instruments which included playing mandolin in the church worship band. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing and bird watching, and in his younger years he was involved in coaching baseball. His greatest joy in life though was his family, especially all his grandchildren.
James is survived by three children, and their spouses, James E., Jr. and Jennifer Wright of Dunn, N.C., Patricia and Burt Ussery of Arabi and Bobby G. Wright, Sr. of Vienna; his sweetheart, Elaine McBryant of Pitts; his siblings, Sam Wright and his wife, Tess of Fitzgerald and Louise Clark of Pittsboro, N.C.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
