Crisp County Fire Rescue responded to the Crisp County Detention Center at approximately 7:44 p.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2019.
E911 dispatched them to a possible electrical fire in a cell. The Control Room operator ceased power to all electrical outlets and placed the facility on lockdown. Detention officers were able to extinguish the small fire before Crisp County Fire Rescue arrived. Sheriff Billy Hancock requested the assistance of Captain Marty Black, the Origin and Cause investigator with Crisp County Fire Rescue. No injuries were reported.
This is the second fire caused by inmates tampering with the electrical outlet to heat products they purchase from the commissary. Staff will continue to conduct regular cell searches in efforts to eliminate these devices from circulation. The investigation continues to determine if arson charges will be issued.
