CORDELE- The Crisp County High School baseball team hosted the Berrien County Rebels for a non-region contest on Thursday night. Berrien came up with the win after taking the lead in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Cougars.
Berrien was able to get the first two batters of the game on base, but Myles Napier got the next two batters to fly out. An RBI hit to left field allowed a runner to score for the Rebels, but the Cougars were able to limit the damage to one run, as a runner was tagged out at third base for the final out of the inning.
Napier led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to centerfield to get the Cougar offense off to a good start. Conner Richmond then knocked a base hit to right center to give Crisp two runners on base. Jackson Napier and Collin Infante kept the offense rolling with consecutive RBI singles to score Richmond and Myles Napier. Jackson Napier was also able to score a run in the inning to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead going into the second inning.
Berrien tacked on another run in the top of the second inning after an error by the Cougars, but the Cougars were able to extend the lead back out to two runs in the bottom half. Myles Napier reached base with one out in the bottom of the second frame after the Berrien County defense let his pop up fall on the infield. Richmond then sent Napier home with an RBI single to give the Crisp a 4-2 lead going into the third inning.
Berrien added another run in the top of the third inning after loading the bases, but Myles Napier and Berrien County’s pitcher settled in for the next few innings. The game then became a pitching duel up until the seventh inning as neither offense could manage more than two base runners until the game reached the final frame. The Cougars led 4-3 going into the decisive seventh inning.
The Rebels took the lead 6-4 in the top of the seventh inning after scoring three runs. The Cougars could not manage to find any more offense in the bottom half of the inning, and the Rebels were able to hang on for the 6-4 road win.
