“I would like to start off by complimenting the school system,” Stewart said. “I have been very pleased with everything proactively.”
Stewart added his son, Jackson, has muscular dystrophy and became wheelchair bound in February 2009.
“The building structure at the middle school is different than the other schools he has attended,” Stewart said.
“He has issues that are greater to deal with than the accessibility at the school. I ask that each of you put yourself in his position as he goes through the day and see his difficulty.”
Although the middle school is wheelchair accessible, there is not a ramp at every door.
The board took Stewart’s request into consideration for further discussion.
In other business at Tuesday’s meeting:
— Superintendent Jay Brinson said “school is off to a great start. We had 4,215 students enrolled and by August 5 enrollment grew to 4,381 students.”
— The board approved consideration of personnel for three resignations, one termination, one transfer and 12 new employees.
— A request for an overnight field trip by Ms. Sonya Mizell was approved. She asked permission for one student with one chaperone to attend CTI State Officer Training at Rock Eagle September 9-10, 2010.
— Approval was granted for a request to refurbish pine bark at all elementary schools around their playground equipment to meet state code. The total cost of installation is $7,700. If approved, this project will be funded through SPLOST II.
— Payment for an archeological study was approved by the board.
Prior to any site work on the property for the new K-1 school, the state requires an archeological study to determine if there is any historical significance present on the site such as Indian burial grounds. This will also be a SPLOST II expenditure.
—Brinson recognized board members for successfully completing training activities sponsored by the Georgia School Boards Association.
Receiving certificates at Tuesday’s meeting were Troy Pullin, Scott Forehand, Lydia Adkins, Tom Carden, Allen Mussellwhite and Dr. Erskine R. Weaver.
