CORDELE — Representatives from Emory University’s Cancer Research Center are at Crisp Regional Hospital.
According to the Director of Community Relations at the hospital, Trina Barber, CRH has been chosen as a pilot site for a 15 year cancer research study.
She said, “we are targeting 800-1000 people. Participants will give blood, urine, and saliva samples, complete several questionnaires, and have their blood pressure, weight and pulse measured.
“Also there will be information needed concerning an applicant’s personal and family health history, lifestyle, eating habits and exposure to medications.”
Barber added, “hospital employees are currently being processed and starting Monday, we will be screening and signing up applicants at Crisp Regional Medical office building between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There is also a screening scheduled at the Warwick Clinic Friday, April 6 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
“Furthermore, we will have our Annual Health Fair Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21 at South Georgia Technical College from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. ” More people will have an opportunity to sign up then.
Dr. Theresa Gillespie, oncologist from Emory University is here and said, “The Georgia Cancer Coalition has worked in partnership with Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition conducting this statewide study, and eventually will enroll 140,000 in the program.
“I’m grateful for these participants because they won’t directly benefit, most likely, but their children and grandchildren will. I would also like to thank Mr. Wayne Martin, CEO of Crisp Regional and Trina Barber, director of community relations.”
