Cordele — Council had the first reading of a property tax increase of 1.5 mills, which, if passed, will bring the millage rate from its current 9.5 mills to 11 mills.

The reading also included the addition of an administrative fee to garbage pickup of 50 cents per container as well as an increase on cemetery lot fees and the fees on business licenses. A public hearing will be scheduled sometime within the next 2-3 weeks to address the issues.

Janet Joiner gave an update on the Pepsi refresh pool grant.

Currently the project has received 184 votes online, which is currently behind in the voting. All that could be turned around with the help of local citizens daily casting their votes for the project. Voting ends on August 31.

Joiner also noted that since the council approved the request for additional funding from Stantec that they will be proceeding with the finalization of plans and specifications for the Union Street sidewalk and landscaping project.

Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed also gave  council members a report that included the department acquiring two more pickup trucks for use by public works through the DRMS Program. They are also going to pick up exercise equipment that has also been obtained from the program.

Also on the agenda:

Council members unanimously approved resolution-Section 5311 Capital Improvement Contract.

Board members also gave their OK to a request from the Dooly County Chamber of Commerce for two doors in the building they occupy on Union Street with the condition that the doors are in line with the historic building.

It was also reported that recent lightning damage in the area had been inspected by the insurance company. A response is pending, the city clerk said.

The next meeting of the Vienna City Council will be held Monday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at Vienna City Hall.
