Vienna —
VIENNA — Board of Education members here held their recent board meeting in the library of the Dooly County High School to make room for a large group of special guests.
The board honored over 30 parents for their commitment to the “Parents Taking the Initiative” program with the local school system. The program encourages parents to be more hands on with the education of their children and also gives them the opportunity to come on campus and into the classroom and volunteer at the schools.
“In order to have a school system that we can be proud of we have got to have parental involvement,” said Superintendent Dr. Grady Miles. “Since the program’s beginning, this is the largest group of parents we have recognized.”
Parents were presented a certificate for the achievement and were congratulated by school board members Eddie Almond, Melvilla West, Janie Winters, Wayne Wilkin and Verlin Jones.
Board members also had the opportunity to review data collected systemwide on student performance and attendance.
Part of the collected data was the percentage of students and faculty members who have been absent from school any number of days up to 10 or more.
Also included in the presentation was the percentage of students on each grade level that received A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s or F’s. A separate list was provided detailing the percentage of student infractions both during school hours and while being transported on school buses.
To the pleasure of the board the percentage of students receiving out-of-school suspension was low — just barely over 4%.
“It is good to see that number low but I would like to see it get down to zero,” said Wilkin.
Also on the agenda, board members:
• Tabled until their November meeting a decision on tennis courts resurfacing.
• Approved a part time STAR program.
• Authorize purchase of 102 lockers for Dooly County Middle School at a cost of $5,807.50 from Salsbury Industries.

Wildcats earn third straight title series berth
The little ol’ town of Bethlehem and its top-ranked GISA Class A state baseball team couldn’t keep Crisp Academy from achieving Friday something akin to a yule gift — a third straight state title series berth.
Paired against a host Knights’ squad that brought a sparkling 19-2 record into a best-of-three series to determine which of them would qualify for the finals, coach John Penney’s Wildcats swept their hosts by 6-1 and 9-7 scores. - Former Crisp, NFL player to host July football camps for youths
