Cordele —
Crisp County High’s wrestling team eked out wins over Berrien County and Perry High in competition Thursday at A.S. Clark Elementary School to improve its record to 5-2.
Notching six pins against Berrien, the Cougar grapplers emerged victorious 42-40 despite having to forfeit six points right off the bat. Getting seven pins in its first-ever win over Perry and automatically starting out 12 points behind due to being overweight in the 132- and 138-pound classes, the locals defeated the Panthers 42-39.
“Both Berrien and Perry have very good wrestling programs so it was very good to hand them losses,” coach Todd George said. “I’m proud of the guys for stepping up and doing the great job they have as a team.
In Saturday’s 10-team competition at the Trojan Duals hosted by Lee County High, Crisp emerged as the overall champion with a perfect 5-0 record.
En route to the title, the Cougars defeated Lee County “B” 52-18, Lee County “A” 42-39, Turner County 52-20, Cairo High 58-48 and Hardaway of Columbus 43-42.
“This is the first time we’ve won a tournament like this as a team and I;m really proud of the guys for doing so,” George said.
“They did a great job and are continuing to come together as team. As a result, I’m looking forward to a great season.”
Now 10-2 overall, Crisp’s next start comes at home Tuesday at 5:30 against Rutland of Macon and Turner Co.=unty
