Fullington teams fall victim to Generals

Dasher — Georgia Christian School’s basketball teams made the home court advantage work to their favor in a Friday night Region 3-A GISA twin bill vs. Fullington Academy.

A 41-32 victor over the Lady Trojans when they met 10 days earlier in Pinehurst, the Lady Generals capitalized on a highly unusual number of traveling calls against their guests to post a 38-34 overtime win.

A 54-51 loser to the Trojans in the initial encounter between the schools, the Generals took advantage of the physical inside play allowed by the officials to register a whopping 54-27 triumph.

Those outcomes left Fullington’s girls with a record of 3-11 overall, 1-4 in league play and its boys with a mark of 7-7, 4-1. Both will be idle until Friday when they’ll be at home against Randolph Southern.

GCS 38, Fullington 34 (girls)

Just 11 seconds away from a 32-30 win in regulation play, Fullington saw its frustration over the officiating prove costly when it was hit with a technical foul for slamming the ball to the floor after being whistled for a traveling violation.

That penalty sent the Lady Generals’ Lauren Redshaw to the free throw line where she calmly nailed a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime where the Lady Trojans were outscored 6-2.

“I really thought we played well enough to have won only to get hurt by some questionable calls as we pretty much did everything we wanted to do,” Fullington coach Mike Cason said.

“We played really good defense and also out-rebounded them 39-25 but that wasn’t enough to overcome 29 turnovers more than half of which were on very unusual traveling calls.”

Rachel McCleskey pitched in 13 points and Darrian Bailey bagged 11 for the Lady Trojans who led 7-6 after a canto, trailed 17-16 at halftime and stood tied at 25 at the three-quarter mark. Lindsey Levings, a 6-3 transfer from Echols County during the yule holidays, was high for GCS with 15.

Generals 54, Trojans 27

Any resemblance between the Trojans’ team that showed up for its re-match with the Generals and the one that had beaten them in Pinehurst was purely coincidental.

“We definitely weren’t our normal selves,” coach Van Bailey said. “I don’t know of it was the long trip down here or fatigue from having gone all out in our game the night before, but for whatever reason we were very sloppy with the basketball.

“On top of that, the excellent zone defense they played against us took its toll as our outside shooting continued to be cold of late. Our interior game was off, too, as our three inside men (David Roney, Levi McKinney and Daniel Cape) combined for just four field goals.

“It didn’t help either that we couldn’t stop their break that helped them get us down early and quickly took us out of our normal game plan. Ultimately, they showed why they’re ranked No. 2 in the state.”

The owner of 18-8, 33-10 and 46-19 quarter advantages, GCS offered a solid 1-2 scoring punch in C.J. Lynch with 20 points and Jeremiah Beverly with 17. Braden Shealy sacked 13 for Fullington.
