ROCHELLE — If there’s one thing you can say about Wilcox High’s Lady Patriots to date it’s that they’ve been consistently inconsistent.

A case in point came during their 8-1 loss Tuesday to Schley County’s Lady Wildcats whose run total included just two earned scores as the other six were aided by Wilcox errors.

“We don’t play sharp ball at times,” Lady Patriot coach George Kennedy said. “We’ll play real well like we did the first time we met Schley (which won that encounter 2-1) and when we faced (Class AAAA) Lee County in the Watermelon Invitational where Wilcox lost 4-3).

“Today was a case of us committing too many errors (5) and striking out too many times (5). We also continued to make too many easy outs as the result of not hitting the ball hard enough. We’ve got to get in the weight room so that we can get stronger.”

Schley County had troubles getting untracked in this one as it wasn’t until the third inning that it scored three times via a pair of hits and errors.

After again scoreless in the fourth, the Lady Wildcats used two hits and an error to pick up another run that made it 4-0 before they equaled their production for the first five frames with a four-run sixth. The big blow in that inning was Ansley Phillips’ 3-run homer.

Wilcox averted a shutout in the bottom of that frame when Sara Hall lived on an error, took second on Heather Watson’s two-out single and scored on Nicole Hilliard’s single that ended the game’s scoring.

Now 2-9 on the year, the Lady Patriots will return to action today at 5 p.m. in Ashburn against Turner County.
