CORDELE — Forced first by weather conditions and then by the absence of registered officials to postpone scheduled meetings here, Crisp and Worth counties finally got to play each other Wednesday.
The clashes turned out to be good news for the local teams who took the boys game 65-58 and won the girls contest 55-47.
Both the Cougars and Lady Cougars will return to action on Tuesday at Dougherty County and then will close out regular season play at home on Friday when senior night will be observed.
Cougars 65, Rams 58
A solid first period start and a strong fourth stanza finish enabled coach Robert Cotton’s squad to offset sluggish quarters they had in between and win the first of their two meetings with the Rams within a three-day span.
Crisp outscored its guest 24-16 in the initial eight minutes of play, then narrowly won the second canto 8-7 and the third one 11-10 before using a 25-22 advantage down the stretch to hang on for the hard-earned win.
“We did just enough to win as we were still a little fatigued from the four-overtime battle we had the night before at Peach County,” Cougar assistant coach Lemetrice Ray said. “Probably the big factor in the final outcome was our athleticism in the front court.”
Scoring leaders for the winners were D.J. Jackson with 27 and Dermonti Dempsey with 14. Worth got 20 points from J. Alford and 14 from T. Farger.

“I kept thinking they couldn’t keep on making 3’s like they were doing, but they did,” said Crisp coach Molly Speir who saw the Lady Rams sink three treys in the first half and then nail another eight after intermission.
“We didn’t play very good defense either especially in the second half when we were trying to get playing time for everybody. Overall, it was one of those games where we played just well enough to come out on top.”
Mariah Davis, 17, Keidra Green, 13, and Monique Grant, 11, all had double digit points totals for the winners. Kim Evans, 17, and Christie Smith, 15, did likewise for the losers.
