PINEHURST — After scoring a 15-5 home field victory Wednesday over one of the larger GISA members, Fullington’s Lady Trojans posted a 6-1 road win Thursday over one of the state’s smaller private schools.
With the sweep, coach Billy Ruis’ squad extended its winning string to eight games after starting out the year 0-3. It will try to add to that streak on Tuesday when it plays host to Covenant Christian in its region debut. It also hosts Westwood on Wednesday and Windsor on Thursday at 4:30.
Lady Trojans 6, Lady Wildcats 1
Clinging to a slim 2-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth, the Lady Trojans broke loose at that point for four runs and then nailed down the decision by keeping Westwood off the scoreboard in its final two at-bats.
A single by pinchhitter Taylor Dickerson triggered the late production as Abbe Jolly and Ashley Langston followed with singles that plated the first run. Ashlyn Reed then delivered Jolly and Langston with a double before a Lady Wildcat error allowed Reed to cross the plate.
Earlier in the contest, Westwood had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on two singles sandwiched around a stolen base before Fullington drew even in the second when Betsy Henry doubled and later raced home on a throwing error to first.
Fullington weathered a scare in the bottom of the second when the Lady Wildcats loaded the bases with one out only to see Jordan Bauldree snare a fly ball in short right and rifle a strike to the plate where Taylor Faircloth made a swiping tag for an inning-ending twin kill.
“We got good pitching (Brittany Bailey struck out three, walked no one and allowed five hits in going the distance), good defense (the Lady Trojans committed just one error) and timely hitting (Jolly, Reed, Henry and Joiner Ivey equally divided eight of the team’s 12 safeties),” Ruis said.
Lady Trojans 15, Lady Knights 5
For 1 1/2 innings, Fullington looked like it would have a stiff fight on its hands as Deerfield scored three times in the top of the first and picked up what would be its last two scores in the second for a short-lived 5-4 edge.
The Lady Trojans went on top to stay with three runs in the second and then kept padding their advantage by scoring three more times in the third, once in the fourth and four times in the fifth.
“This was one of those games were everyone got playing time and I was really glad to see that,” said Ruis whose team finished with 12 hits half of which were equally split between Bailey and Jolly.
The mound win went to Bailey who after coming on in relief of Reed in the third struck out two, walked one and yielded just three hits.
