Crisp soccer teams split with Worth, sweep Albany

Cordele — Crisp County High soccer teams got a Monday home field split with Worth County and a Tuesday road sweep of Albany High.

In the first of those two matches, the Rams defeated the Cougars 3-1 before the Lady Cougars turned back the Lady Rams 2-0.

In the boys battle, the visiting Rams scored their first goal with 16 minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. They posted their second goal less than a minute into the second half.

With about 10 minutes to play, the Cougars’ pulled to within 2-1 when Brandon Williams scored with an assist from Matthew Windham. Worth offset that score with two minutes left to play against Crisp goalie Kimble Williams who had seven saves in the loss.

In the girls game, Savannah Thompson and Anna Olsen each managed a goal for Crisp County while goalie Morgan Kimbrel came up with nine saves to help secure the victory.

During their visit to the Indians reservation in Albany, the Lady Cougars racked up an 8-0 triumph that the Cougars followed with a 7-1 win.

In the opening match, La’Kerria Hover led the scoring for Crisp County with four goals. Savannah Thompson, Johnna Roberson, Lakeyah Lawson and Camille Gibson each had one. Kimbrel recorded her second consecutive shut-out.

In the nightcap, Tyler Collins led the Cougars’ offense with three goals. Blake Fine scored a pair and Tahjia Thompson and Emmanuel Ricardo came up with one apiece as the team posted its first victory of the season.

The Cougars, now 1-1 in the region and 1-2 overall, and Lady Cougars, who read 2-1 in all matches, 2-0 in league play, will play host today to Cairo. Masculine competition begins at 5 and feminine play starts at 7.

“I thought both teams played well against Albany, doing a better job on defense and passing the ball around,” assistant Crisp coach Shawn Burns said in speaking for head coach Jose Rodriguez.

“The boys also played well the first half against Worth before having some breakdowns in the second half. The girls played tough against Worth, too, showing consistency for most of the match. Against Albany, they did a good job of keeping up their intensity for the entire match.”
