VIENNA — After passing the first of their 10 straight Region 4-A tests when they blanked Greenville High 8-0 at home, Dooly County’s Bobcats go on the road this Friday for another stiff exam.
Administering it in a game to be played in Columbus will be Brookstone’s Cougars, which opened its 2010 campaign with an impressive 42-9 rout of Macon County’s Bulldogs, also a member of Region 4-A.
“They’re a very disciplined team that’s maybe not quite as athletic as some opponents we’ll play but they make up for that by holding their mistakes to a minimum,” first-year Dooly coach Jimmy Hughes said
“When on offense, they seemingly block the right people on just about every play to gain good yardage out of the multiple wing-T formation they use as their base.
“Then when they’re on defense, they seem to always be in the right place at the right time to keep a play from being a big gainer for the opposition. It’s really difficult to outflank they as they try to keep everything turned inside.”
While qualifying for postseason play a sixth time within the last seven years in 2009, Brookstone went 8-3 — a mark that Hughes believes they could well match or better this season.
A stalwart for both their heavily ground-oriented go-team and stingy stop-’em crew is Brewton McCluskey, a 195-pound senior who stands out like a sore thumb at fullback and middle linebacker.
“With McCluskey leading the way, they try to control the clock and the game by sticking to the ground,” Hughes said. “When they’re on defense, they don’t do a lot of blitzing as the approach they take is more of bend, but don’t break with McCluskey being a key.
“Another standout for them is No. 2 who does a good job alternating between linebacker and end on defense and plays tight end on offense as like us they have a lot of kids going both ways.
“Special teams wise, they definitely have the upper hand with a punter who does a great job and a placement kicker whose range appears to be 40-45 yards.”
In order for Dooly to hang with and possibly come out on top in the game, Hughes said it must be able to run the ball better than it did against Greenville and must keep its mistakes to a minimum in hopes of increasing the number of points it puts on the scoreboard.
“We turned the ball over twice deep in our own territory and thanks to the great defense we played were fortunate enough to keep them out of our end zone. We can’t keep expecting to do that, though.”
One thing the Bobcats do have going in their favor is that they’ve won all four of their previous clashes with the Cougars, with the last of them coming by a 34-14 score in 2007.
