Fullington seniors sparkle on day they're honored

Pinehurst — On the day they suited up for their final regular season home game ever, it was only fitting that seniors did the bulk of the scoring during Fullington Academy’s Saturday romps past Sherwood.

Twelfth graders Brittany Bailey, Taylor Faircloth and Paige Jackson combined for exactly half of the points the Lady Trojans managed in their 62-27 non-region win that gave their team a 16-11 record.

The quartet of Adam Everidge, John Roger Harvey, Nick Neisler and Blake Simmons jointly scored 45 points in their sayonara efforts as the 18-7 Trojans trounced the Eagles 60-42.

Seeded second for the Region 3-AA GISA tournament competition they’re now hosting, the Fullington teams will see their first on Thursday when the girls face xxxxxxx at 4 p.m. and the boys meet xxxxxxx at 5:30.

Depending upon how they fare in those scraps, they’ll take the floor again on Friday in either the consolation games set for 4 (girls) and 5:30 or the title tilts that tip off at 7 (girls) and 8:30. They’ll then advance to next week’s opening round of state play.

Fullington 62, Sherwood 27

Having clobbered the Lady Eagles by 55-25 and 56-19 scores when they met first in Albany and later in Terrell’s Tip-Off Tournament, the Lady Trojans didn’t figure to have a difficult time in getting past them here.

That’s the way it worked out, too, as by the first quarter’s end Fullington already owned a commanding 16-point lead (20-4) that would only continue to mushroom as the game progressed. It was 33-10 at intermission and 54-19 heading into the final turn.

“We took it to them in the first half with our press and fast break and when they didn’t do a good job of handling either we quickly took control of things,” Fullington coach Mike Cason said.

“We wound up shooting well (connecting on 24 of 48 attempts), won the rebound battle (35-31) and also fared better than they did in the turnover department (the Lady Trojans had 20, the Lady Eagles had 33).

“It was just a good way to end the regular season, get playing time for everyone and make this a memorable night for our three seniors.”

The Bailey cousins — Brittany and Darrian — topped Fullington’s scoring with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Faircloth was right behind that pair with 11. Keyada Tomas paced Sherwood with 11.

Score by Quarters

Sherwood 4-6-9-8 — 27

Fullington 20-13-21-8 — 62

Scoring

Sherwood (27) — Madison Walker 5, Rayston Couch 2, Cheyenne McComas 3, Bri Cown 2, Taylor Walker 2, Keyada Tomas 11, Demond Clark 2.

Team totals: field goals 11; free throws 3 of 5 (60%); fouls 21; 3-pointers — McComas 1, Thomas 1; fouled out — none.

Fullington (62) — Paige Jackson 6, Brittany Bailey 14, Darrian Bailey 12, Taylor Bloodworth, Taylor Faircloth 11, Lena van Assendelft 2, Rachel McCleskey 12, Madison Warbington 3, Lex van Assendelft 2.

Team totals: field goals 24; free throws 11 of 25 (44%); fouls 9; 3-pointers — Jackson 2, Faircloth 1; fouled out — none.

Trojans 60, Eagles 42

After the Lady Trojans easily made their second look at the Lady Eagles a rewarding one, the Trojans turned their repeat appearance vs. the Eagles into a night to successfully avenge a season-opening 64-44 loss.

Wasting no time in showing they are indeed the better team, the Fullington boys sprinted to a 14-4 first period lead they continued to pad for most of the evening. An 11-8 second stanza edge made it 25-12 at halftime. A 19-12 third canto advantage raised the score to 44-24 before Sherwood narrowly won the final period 18-16.

“The first time we faced them, we couldn’t break their press,” Trojan coach Van Bailey acknowledged afterwards. “This time, we had no problem with it as all the lay-ups we got against it were proof of just how far we’ve come these last couple of months.

“Overall, it was a situation where both teams used the game as kind of a sparring match to help prepare for the tournaments ahead. However, they

did go with an all-senior starting line-up which they didn’t do the night before when they went with their best players in a key region game.

“It wound up being just a great night for us as we were able to showcase our seniors, get playing time for everybody else and turn in a second straight great defensive effort against a very athletic team.

“The 18-7 record we now have is definitely a lot better than I had anticipated when we started out. It speaks highly of all our kids and especially of the senior leadership we’ve gotten along the way.”

Neisler and Simmons ran neck-and-neck in the individual scoring race for the winners with 18 and 17 points, respectively. David Roney racked up another 10. Simmons also had 13 rebounds. Rashard Davis dropped in 17 points for Sherwood.
