Bobcats trounce Schley's Wildcats

Vienna — Seemingly hitting its peak at the right time, Dooly County pitched a 48-0 shutout of Schley County in a Friday night game that saw the hosts set a single-game scoring high for the season and hand their foe its only shutout loss of 2012.

“I’m really proud of the way we’re playing both offensively and defensively right now,” coach Jimmy Hughes said after watching his Bobcats nail down Region 4-A’s No. 2 seed for the Nov. 23 opening round of state play.

“That’s why I have mixed feelings about the off week we have coming up. On the one hand, I’m happy with where we are and wish we were playing this coming week as usual. But on the other hand, the extra time off will allow healing to some nagging injuries several of our guys have been battling.”

Who Dooly will face when it returns to action 12 days from now remains unsure as the final power rankings and seedings won’t be released until Tuesday. It’s almost a certainty that it will be at home for its playoff opener.

In surpassing its previous single-game points high of 47 set two weeks earlier in a 33-point rout of Pacelli, Dooly wasted little time in launching its scoring parade by posting a pair of touchdowns in the first eight minutes of action.

The initial one capped a nine-play, 68-yard drive that followed the opening kickoff. It came on a 15-yard pass from A.J. Smith to Tyrone Anderson who earlier in the drive had hooked up on a 27-yard pass play. Chanin Hamilton had an 11-yard run and Mark Lloyd gains of 9 and 2 from Wildcat formation.

After forcing Schley into a punting situation, the Bobcats then went on a 70-yard, five-snap excursion during which Smith first found Clark for an 11-yard aerial gain before connecting with him again on a 47-yard rainbow toss down the left sideline.

In the second period, Dooly missed out on one scoring opportunity when Smith threw an interception at the Schley 22 right after Kris Lundy had gained 32 on an end-round run. It made good on two other chances to get points, though, as after Lundy picked off a pass at his own 40 Hamilton immediately broke free on a 60-yard gallop.

Then after a Schley runner was stripped of the ball at the Bobcats’ 10 following a long kickoff return, Smith first found Anderson on a 43-yard pass and then with a 24-yard TD toss on a slant pattern.

“We played real well in taking the early first quarter lead but then had a little loss of concentration for a few minutes during which we kind of lost our way and committed some silly penalties,” Hughes said in evaluating his team’s pre-intermission performance.

“Thankfully, we turned things back around to continue the good play we’ve gotten the last few weeks and go up 28-0 at halftime. And the good thing about that is that it’s not been a case of one person or one phase of the game but rather everything seeming to come together at the same time.”

The Bobcats, who finish regular season play with a report card of 8-2 overall, 6-1 in region play, continued their two-TDs-per-quarter consistency in the third period.

Starting from their own 32 after a punt, they wheeled 68 yards in five snaps. Hamilton first dragged tacklers for a 10-yard gain before Anderson and Lundy had end-around sprints of 32 and 13 with the latter’s carry getting the points.

One play after Dooly’s ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats fumbled at their own 32. Lined up at tight end, Bobcats do-it-all stalwart Montravious Adams immediately snared a 31-yard pitch from Smith who then followed his center into the end zone on a 1-yard scoring plunge.

Schley, which came into the clash averaging just over 30 points per game and left it the owner of a 2-8, 2-5 report card, promptly threatened to avoid its first shutout loss of the season.

After recovering Dooly’s pooch kick at its 36 and getting 15 more yards to the Bobcats’ 49 on a late-hit penalty, Tra’ Minter zipped 34 yards to the Bobcats’ 15. Four short runs resulted in first-and-goal at the 3 before the defense dug in to make a goal line stand and take the ball over on downs at the 2.

Hamilton moved it out to the 5 on the final play of the third period and then on the first snap of the fourth quarter got a good block from fullback Zach Hooks and sailed 95 yards down the sideline for a 95-yard score. Diego Cruz’ bid for a perfect 7-for-7 night on PATs was foiled when his final kick hit the upright.

Smith had his best night of the season statistically, completing nine of his 15 passes for a whopping 340 yards and  three touchdowns. His favorite receiver was Anderson who had a season-high five receptions for 118 yards and two TDs.

Hamilton, meanwhile, followed up on his 231-yard effort the week before in a 28-21 win over Greenville with a 17-carry, 225-yard effort that produced two scores.

“As a team, we set a season high for total yardage (557) and it all started up front where our offensive linemen have really blocked well of late and that’s helped both our passing and ground games,” Hughes said.

“Opposing defenses can’t show them anything they haven’t already seen and as the result we’ve been able to run the football despite basically facing eight-man fronts daring us to throw.

“And as far as our defense goes, coach (Shelton) Felton and his staff and players did an excellent job of making it difficult for a Schley team that nobody has really shut down for the last two seasons to get anything going.”
