Wadley, Ala. —
Former County High pitching star Davis Adkins recorded the first save of his college career Tuesday, working out of a bases-loaded, no-outs ninth-inning jam to preserve Darton’s 11-10 win over Southern Union.
After the Cavaliers had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to later take an 11-9 lead into the final inning of play, their closer filled the sacks before being replaced on the hill by Adkins, a 6-foot-2 righthander with sneaky stuff.
After getting an RBI grounder that brought it within a run with two men in scoring position, the home team attempted a suicide squeeze that Adkins foiled by making the batter miss a wicked curve he threw.
On that botched play, the runner at third was nailed at the plate for the second out and the runner at second was caught in a rundown for the game-ending third out.
Adkins has now seen action in three games for the 5-2 Darton team that many think is one of its best ever. The Cavaliers will face Northwest Florida State this weekend in Niceville, Fla.
