Coach Jody Hays’ Crisp Academy Wildcats scored a 52-36 win over Southland Academy in the opening game of the Christmas tournament hosted by CA Thursday.
They were scheduled to meet Mt. de Sales of Macon in a Friday game.
Since most of his guys are young and inexperienced, Hays was particularly proud of their performance in the second half of the contest with Southland. “We struggled in the opening half, and were down by five at halftime, but we made some defensive adjustments, and held their second half scoring to less than 10 points each quarter.
“Jake Smith and Jordan Howard had really good games offensively, scoring 13 and 15 points respectively. Defensively, Jeff McKinney and Chris McGee made key contributions in the second half.”
Hays said Smith had one of his best games so far. “He’s a big key to our success, because the other guys follow his lead.”
Besides Smith and Howard, CA also got scoring from Banks Folsom, 8; Hunter Chambers, 7; Chip Posey, 5 and McGee, 4. The Wildcats were slightly better than 50% from the free throw line, and both Smith and Posey had three-pointers.
For Southland, Jon Adkins was the only player to reach double digits with 14 points. Two of that team’s players fouled out.
Although the ‘Cats are 3-5 at this point in the season, they are beginning to gel, and Hays looks forward to continued improvement, he says.
