CORDELE — Beaten and battered during their season-opening loss to Covenant Christian last Friday, Crisp Academy’s Wildcats will make their home field debut in much better physical condition come tomorrow night.
Head coach Jerry Breeden got the good news earlier this week that quarterback James Bodrey, who sat out most of the 24-16 loss to the Rams due to a concussion, has been cleared to play in this week’s game against Nathaniel Greene.
“James wasn’t allowed to practice Monday through Wednesday, but after that he’s been told it’s OK for him to play Friday night,” Breeden said. “We’ll also have (tackle) Jordan Howard in the line-up as the finger dislocation he suffered last week won’t keep him on the bench either.”
The availability of that pair brightens the mood of everyone associated with the team that has just 15 players on its roster. That’s only two less than Nathaniel Greene will suit up here after losing its opener 40-14 to Piedmont.
“Numbers wise, we’re about even and that’s good to know,” said Breeden who after watching films of the Patriots’ debut credited them for their refusal to throw in the towel after falling into a 28-0 first-half hole against the Cougars.
“It was evident they kept playing hard despite being down by such a big margin as they came back to score twice in the second half and almost scored twice more only to fumble at the 2- and 5-yard lines. They’re the type team that doesn’t give up and plays to the last whistle.”
When it comes to offense, Nathaniel Greene employs two tights ends while attacking from the wing-T formation featuring a lot of power running and mis-direction. For the most part, they stay on the ground about 90 percent of the time while throwing only sparingly.
“No. 20 at quarterback and No. 21 and No. 34 at the wingbacks are all good runners with the speed to get outside with the sweeps they run,” Breeden said. “Their line looks to be about the same size as outs, with No. 66 at a tackle slot and No. 3 at a guard position both looking like real good blockers.”
Defensively, Breeden said the Patriots employ a 5-2 front as they like to go man-to-man with opposing wideouts and walk everybody else up within 10 yards of the football. The standouts again are No. 66 at tackle and No. 63 and No. 21 at linebacker.
“One of the keys for us,” Breeden said, “is going to be getting an offense going that allows us to control the football without turnovers. Another is to stop their running game and not let them have the 8- 10- and 12-play drives they were able to mount in their loss to Piedmont.
“It’s going to be a real physical battle and in order for us to hang in there with them we’ve got to be ready to go toe-to-toe up front and then be able to make the tackles as those backs come right at us.
“I really think we’ll be ready to play as the kids have practiced well all week in the cooler temperatures we’ve have. They’re excited about this being our home opener as everybody’s all pumped up in anticipation of the game.”
